Gordon Satterly, 61, from Michigan (L) kisses his husband Richard Brand, 53, from Texas, at the International Gay Rodeo Association's Rodeo In the Rock party in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States April 24, 2015. Contestants at the International Gay Rodeo in Arkansas, a Bible Belt state with a same-sex marriage ban on its books, competed in events from barrel racing to bull riding on the soft soil of a fairground that looked like just any small-scale rodeo held throughout the United States. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule in June whether to strike down bans on gay marriage nationwide. Arkansas has been one of the front-line states in the battle between cultural conservatives and those seeking expanded rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. A Turkana boy holds on to his father's rifle in a village inside the Turkana region of the Ilemi Triangle, northwest Kenya December 21, 2014. The Ilemi Triangle is a disputed region in East Africa, claimed by South Sudan and Kenya, bordering also Ethiopia. The dispute arose from unclear wording of a 1914 treaty which tried to allow free movement of the Turkana people, nomadic herders who had traditionally grazed the area. An armed Turkana man walks towards the shores of Lake Turkana near a temporary fishing camp some kilometres from Todonyang near the Kenya-Ethiopia border in northwestern Kenya October 12, 2013. The Turkana are traditionally nomadic pastoralists, but they have seen the pasture that they need to feed their herds suffer from recurring droughts and many have turned to fishing. However, Lake Turkana is overfished, and scarcity of food and pastureland is fuelling long-standing conflict with Ethiopian indigenous Dhaasanac, who have seen grazing grounds squeezed by large-scale government agricultural schemes in southern Ethiopia. The Dhaasanac now venture ever deeper into Kenyan territory in search of fish and grass, clashing with neighbours. Fighting between the communities has a long history, but the conflict has become ever more fatal as automatic weapons from other regional conflicts seep into the area. While the Turkana region is short of basics like grass and ground-water, it contains other resources including oil reserves and massive, newly discovered underground aquifers. Fifteen thousand of them risk their lives every day, tearing down ships at Gaddani beach on the Arabian Sea coast, a 10 km-long death trap. They earn as little as $4 a day. An injured man rests in a makeshift hospital after a massive earthquake in Gunungsitoli in Indonesia's Nias island March 31, 2005. Strong aftershocks rattled Indonesia's earthquake-devastated Nias island on Thursday as international aid flowed in and rescuers pulled survivors and bodies out of the rubble of collapsed buildings. At least three tremors rocked the area off the west coast of Sumatra island, one of them measured at 6.3 on the Richter scale by the Hong Kong observatory, causing alarm as rescue efforts and body recovery operations entered a third day. The assassination of Stang, well-known defender of sustainable development and peasant's rights in the Amazon, and the ensuing investigation have highlighted the battle between small farmers and illegal large-scale loggers backed by companies trying to exploit the Amazon's resources. Police have arrested the two suspected gunmen that killed Stang, and are searching for a man accused of paying for the murder. Senegalese children run as locusts spread in the capital Dakar September 1, 2004. Only a military-style operation with bases across West Africa can stop the worst locust invasion for 15 years, Senegal's President Abdoulaye Wade said on Tuesday as the insects swept into his capital. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) warned last week that the locust swarms infesting countries from Mauritania to Chad could develop into a full-scale plague without additional foreign aid. Chinese women drug addicts eat dinner at the Kunming Drug Rehabilitation Centre, which is the largest in the world with nearly 4,000 addicts, May 20, 2004. After a year of rehabilitation and counseling, former addicts return to society. But one problem remains: there is no guarantee they will not be back. Experts consider Kunming, capital of southwestern province of Yunnan province, to be an international drug smuggling hub on the scale of Bogota or Bangkok because it lies on the ancient "Southwest Silk Road" connecting Myanmar to China. Last year, a million drug users were registered in China. Picture taken May 20, 2004. REUTERS/Andrew Wong Pictures of the Year 2004 ASW/TW
