Mayte Dominuez, shaman of the town of Cuisnahuat, holds up the sacred fire during a ceremony at the Maya archeological site of Tazumal in Santa Ana, about 75 km (47 miles) away from San Salvador December 21, 2012. Mystics, hippies and tourists descended on the ruins of Maya cities to mark the close of the 13th bak'tun - a period of around 400 years - and many hoped it would lead to a better era for humanity. This week, at sunrise on Friday, December 21, an era closes in the Maya Long Count calendar, an event that has been likened by different groups to the end of days, the start of a new, more spiritual age or a good reason to hang out at old Maya temples across Mexico and Central America. John Dimo, a traditional witch-doctor, walks out of his mud-hut before performing an ancient rite with mystical artifacts to predict the outcome of the U.S. elections in Kogelo village, Nyangoma Kogelo, 430 km (367 miles) west of Kenya's capital Nairobi, November 5, 2012. Kogelo is the ancestral home of U.S. President Barack Obama. Dimo, about 115-years-old, says he knew Obama's father who was buried in the village in 1982. The former army officer says he inherited his trade as a witch-doctor from his father in 1962 and is certain his rite will help favour Obama in the U.S. elections. Four years ago, Kogelo, and Africa in general, celebrated with noisy gusto when Obama, whose father came from the scattered hamlet of tin-roofed homes, became the first African-American to be elected president of the United States. Looking across the Atlantic to the November 6 presidential election, the continent is cooler now towards the "son of Africa" who is seeking a second term. There are questions too whether his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, will have more to offer to sub-Saharan Africa if he wins the White House. Malaysian Chinese faith healer Tan Giak Ann performs a prayer around a temple before consulting patients in Kuala Lumpur October 13, 2010. Faith healing continues to find favour in this mainly Muslim country, underscoring the tension between tradition and modernity in Malaysia, a melting pot of Asian cultures with a long history of alternative medicine. Though uncommon, the continued use of exorcists and bomoh, or faith healers, has in part led the government to draft a law to regulate practitioners of traditional and complementary medicine.
