A statue of Lord Buddha is pictured at Kuensel Phodrang in Thimphu May 20, 2012. Premium-paying tourists have long eulogised Bhutan's unspoiled charms, its peace and its pristine environment, but the Himalayan kingdom, famed as the "last Shangri-La", and for using happiness to measure its success, is no idyll. Its economy is struggling, with shantytowns emerging in urban centres, packs of wild dogs roaming freely, and beggars on street corners. Picture taken May 20, 2012. Bhutanese archers react after hitting the target during a weekend traditional archery tournament at Changlimethang stadium May 23, 2012. It made sense that archery was the first event Bhutan entered at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics as archery is the national sport and a national obsession, steeped in myths and legends dating back to the times of the Buddha. Every weekend tournaments are held across the country with village teams, in traditional dress and wielding bamboo bows, heckling as arrows are fired and celebrating with traditional songs and a leg-kicking dance if they hit the target.

The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is becoming increasingly popular for well-heeled travelers keen to explore this remote and unspoiled Buddhist Shangri La. Surrounded by mountains and flanked by India and Tibet, this tiny country has only been opened to tourism for a few decades and its traditional way of life remains miraculously preserved despite the growing prevalence of mobile phones and cable television. Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong) is an enormous fortress-monastery built in 1646 which featured in the movie "The Last Emperor". It is also the site for Bhutan's famous Tsechu, a spectacular festival held each spring where thousands come to see the elaborate costumes and dances which recreate stories from Buddhist mythology.
