A protester holds a sign that reads, "Putin go home", during a mourning mass for Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya in the centre of Sofia January 18, 2008. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday secured Bulgarian participation in an ambitious multi-billion dollar project to expand Russian gas deliveries into Southern Europe. Politkovskaya, a critic of President Putin, was shot dead in 2006 in her Moscow apartment building, prompting international condemnation and heightening concerns over the safety of journalists working in the country. Statues of Gauchito Gil are laid amid wax from red candles a day before the anniversary of his death near the city of Mercedes, in the Argentine province of Corrientes north of Buenos Aires, January 7, 2008. Argentine folk saint Gauchito Gil refused to fight in a civil war and was forced to live as an outlaw, stealing from the rich to give to the poor. After being captured, Gil told his executioner that he should pray for Gil's help to cure his sick son. The executioner repented for killing him and his son recovered miraculously, starting the cult of Gauchito Gil. Every year, tens of thousands of pilgrims visit the sanctuary where Gil's body is said to have been buried. REUTERS/Enrique Marcarian (ARGENTINA)
