FILE PHOTO 22DEC90 - Darci (L) and Darli Alves stand before Judge Adair Longuini (Top L) as he hands down 19-year prison sentences to each for their role in the murder of environmental champion Chico Mendes, in the remote amazonian city of Xapuri, in Acre state, on December 22, 1990. One decade has passed since Mendes, union leader of the rubber-tappers movement against expansive, uncontrolled farming in the Amazon, was gunned down on December 22, 1988. Mendes was the recipient of a Global 500 prize from the United Nations for his courage in defending the rainforest against landowners and cattle ranchers. The Alves' defense lawyer Lauro Lucena is at lower right. Xapuri is located near the Bolivian and Peruvian borders with Brazil in the western Amazon region.
