A novelty bird feeder is buried during a blizzard in a garden in the village of Waterfoot December 17, 2010, as Northern Ireland experiences some of it's heaviest snowfalls in thirty years. A fresh blast of snow threatened to throw Britain's roads and railways into disarray in the run-up to Christmas, as winter tightened its grip on the country for the second time this year. This December is likely to be the coldest since digital records began in 1910 if temperatures in the second half of the month are as low as they have been in the first, said Helen Chivers, a forecaster at the Met Office. El Charcote became a symbol of Chavez's socialist revolution when he sent soldiers to seize it in a 2005 push to break up major ranches and repopulate rural areas largely abandoned since Venezuela's oil industry took off in the 1920s. The government recently bought the last 500,000 acres (200,000 hectares) of land on the farm, a vast cattle ranch that until 2005 belonged to one of Britain's wealthiest families, the Vesteys, and 130,000 cattle, part of a new drive by Chavez to increase state control of food in South America's top oil producer. Myanmar's ethnic Karen children play as heavy rain hits their Mae La refugee camp outside Mae Sot near the Thai-Myanmar border October 14, 2010. Ethnic Karen refugees continue to pour into Thailand, fleeing decades long fighting between Karen rebels and Myanmar government troops and its guerrilla allies. Some 140,000 refugees live in official camps along the Thai-Myanmar border, according to the U.N. refugee agency and there are concerns that hostilities in the hills of Eastern Myanmar could intensify as a result of a refusal of several ethnic political groups to take part in an election next month. A chair is seen amid rubble from part of Yangji village, in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, that has been partially demolished September 22, 2010 ahead of the Asian Games to be held in the city in November. In Guangzhou, hundreds of villagers in older urban areas have clashed with riot police as bulldozers razed homes in a blitz of development ahead of the Games, fuelled in part by soaring real estate prices. Many villagers voiced anger at perceived official corruption and collusion with developers with billions ploughed into public works and as the pressure to force evictions with minimal compensation grows.
