Hong Kong students vowed to stay put at protest sites in key parts of the Asia financial centre on Wednesday in their demand for electoral reforms, defying calls by leaders of the civil disobedience movement Occupy Central for them to retreat.

Hundreds remained at the main protest site of Admiralty, next to government headquarters and the Central business district, determined to continue their fight for free elections for the Chinese-controlled city's next leader in 2017.

Pro-democracy protestors watch a video screen as they gather outside the government headquarters office in Hong Kong October 10, 2014. Hundreds of protesters regrouped in central Hong Kong on Friday to push their call for democracy, a day after the government called off talks with students amid a two-week standoff that has shaken communist China's capitalist hub. Scores arrived with tents, suggesting they were in for the long haul despite a call by police to remove obstacles that have blocked major roads in and out of the financial centre, causing traffic and commuter chaos with tail-backs stretching for miles. Francis Ng, 19, a lifeguard sub-contractor poses in Mongkok shopping district in Hong Kong October 7, 2014. "We have a team of 30 to 40 volunteers ready for the rescue. During my shift in the past eight days I have treated seven." Ng said, "Life is more important than politics. I am neutral." Reuters photographers Carlos Barria and Bobby Yip photographed protestors and details of life on the barricades, asking demonstrators what their role was in the movement, and what they wanted to happen. These two elements combine to form a portrait of the protests. Student protesters galvanized Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement with their energy, bringing tens of thousands of people on to the streets in a show of defiance against Beijing. As events of the last 12 days prove, however, sustaining momentum is difficult, and whatever success protesters had in pressuring the government by disrupting city life, they will always come up against a formidable foe - mainland China. Protest numbers have dwindled markedly to a few hundred people at times, and the focus for pro-democracy activists has switched to talks scheduled for Friday with key officials in the Hong Kong administration. Democratic lawmakers in Hong Kong demanded anti-graft officers investigate a $6.4 million business payout to Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying on Thursday, as political fallout grows from massive student-led protests calling for democracy in the Chinese-controlled city. The controversy ratchets up the pressure on the pro-Beijing leader just days after tens of thousands of people occupied the streets of the Asian financial centre and called for Leung to step down. Government employees arrive to work as they walk along an area occupied by protesters outside of the government headquarters building in Hong Kong October 6, 2014. Some protesters left the Mong Kok area of the city, pulling back from the scene of recent clashes with those who back the pro-Beijing government. Fearing a crackdown as city leaders have called for the streets to be cleared so businesses, schools and civil servants could resume on Monday, other protesters who have paralysed parts of the former British colony with mass sit-ins also pulled back from outside Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying's office.
