Islamic State militants have killed at least 500 members of Iraq's Yazidi ethnic minority during their offensive in the north, Iraq's human rights minister told Reuters on Sunday. The Islamic State, which has declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria, has prompted tens of thousands of Yazidis and Christians to flee for their lives during their push to within a 30-minute drive of the Kurdish regional capital Arbil. Palestinian boys, who fled houses following Israeli offensive, play soccer as they take refuge at a United Nations-run school in Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip July 31, 2014. The United Nations in Gaza is struggling to withstand a flood of almost a quarter of a million refugees into shelters that have repeatedly come under Israeli fire. Eight U.N. employees have been killed since Israel launched its offensive on July 8 after rocket fire from Gaza intensified. U.N. shelters have been bombed by Israel on six separate occasions, including in another shelling of a U.N. shelter last week that killed 15 people. Israel said its forces had come under fire from the vicinity of the school on Wednesday and responded. It denies targeting civilians and says militants use innocents as human shields and their neighbourhoods as firing positions. REUTERS/Mohammed Salem (GAZA - Tags: POLITICS CIVIL UNREST SOCIETY)

A Palestinian woman, who fled her house during an Israeli offensive, holds her sleeping son after breakfast inside a classroom at a United Nations-run school sheltering displaced Palestinians in Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip August 3, 2014. In Israeli southern communities hit by daily rocket and mortar bomb attacks from the Gaza Strip, some residents remained in their shelters, waiting tensely to see if a 72-hour Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that went into effect on Tuesday would hold. In Gaza, Palestinians who sheltered in U.N.-run schools began returning to towns and villages to examine the widespread damage from four weeks of fierce fighting. Picture taken August 3, 2014. Two migrants from Guatemala sleep on the train tracks in Arriaga August 8, 2014. While the White House says the number of Central American child migrants crossing the U.S. border has fallen sharply, the big unanswered question remains why. The U.S. government has pointed to the seasonal weather. However, Reuters reporting in southern Mexico and Central America shows it is due to a combination of factors, including tighter border policing, raids on "La Bestia", or "The Beast" network of cargo trains bound north, horror tales told by deportees who grappled with drug gangs, an advertising blitz touting the dangers of making the journey and the high-profile arrests of several human smugglers, or coyotes. Residents of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, which is located just outside the Gaza strip, hug with other residents, as they meet after being apart for few weeks, at a youth village near the central town of Netanya, where they and other residents have been taking refuge from Palestinian rocket and mortar salvoes, August 11, 2014. A month of war has killed 1,938 Palestinians and 67 Israelis while devastating wide tracts of small, densely populated Gaza. Israel said on Sunday it was prepared for protracted military action in Gaza and would not negotiate under rocket fire as Egypt crafted a new truce plan to try to keep indirect Israeli-Palestinian talks alive. Since a three-day truce expired on Friday, Palestinian rocket and mortar salvoes have focused on Israeli kibbutzim, or collective farms, just across the border in what appeared to be a strategy of sapping the Jewish state's morale without triggering another ground invasion of the tiny Gaza Strip. Though Israel's Iron Dome rocket interceptor does not work at such short ranges there have been few casualties, largely because as many as 80 percent of the border kibbutzim's 5,000 residents fled before last week's ceasefire. Palestinian men prepare to distribute bread at a United Nations-run school acting as a shelter for residents who have fled their homes during an Israeli ground operation, in Jabaliya in the northern Gaza Strip July 29, 2014. Israel's military pounded targets in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country should prepare for a long conflict in the Palestinian enclave, squashing any hopes of a swift end to 22 days of fighting. Israel launched its offensive on July 8 saying it wanted to halt rocket attacks by Hamas and its allies. It later ordered a land invasion to find and destroy the warren of Hamas tunnels that criss-crosses the border area. More than 1,100 Gazans, most of them civilians, have been killed in the conflict. On the Israeli side, 53 soldiers have been killed as well as three civilians. REUTERS/Finbarr O'Reilly (GAZA - Tags: POLITICS MILITARY CIVIL UNREST CONFLICT FOOD)

According to local media, figures from the survey showed that 16.3 percent of the respondents, an estimate of 3.6 million households, said that they went hungry in the past three months. A refugee family hold numbered placards as they pose for a photo during a census conducted by the Thai authorities at Mae La refugee camp, near the Thailand-Myanmar border in Mae Sot district, Tak province, north of Bangkok July 21, 2014. Thai authorities have started conducting the census at Mae La on refugees who fled neighbouring Myanmar, in a bid to crackdown on illegal workers, raising fears among the refugees of an imminent repatriation to Myanmar. Thailand's military government said last Monday it would send home 100,000 refugees who have been living in camps for two decades and more along the border with Myanmar, a move rights groups say would create chaos at a tense time for both nations. The authorities said the census is set to finish at the end of July. REUTERS/Chaiwat Subprasom (THAILAND - Tags: POLITICS SOCIETY TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY)

Palestinians standing behind the gate of Rafah crossing hold their passports as they try to cross into Egypt, in the southern Gaza Strip July 10, 2014. At least 74 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in Israel's Gaza offensive, Palestinian officials said on Thursday, and militants kept up rocket attacks on Tel Aviv and other cities in warfare showing no signs of ending soon. Egypt's state news agency said Egyptian authorities had decided to open the Rafah border crossing to Gaza on Thursday to allow wounded Palestinians to receive medical care in Egypt. Syrian migrant Assaf, 44, who was head of security for a government minister, covers his face to hide his identity as he poses for a photograph at an asylum camp outside Stockholm June 8, 2014. Assaf paid smugglers 8000 euros to get to Sweden. He travelled through the mountains to Turkey and then from Turkey to Greece by boat with dozens of others. He then travelled to Stockholm in a truck. When asked about his future he said, "What future? I am in a foreign country with my family living in danger thousands of miles away. There is no future until they are here." Some 15 percent of Sweden's population is foreign born, the highest level in the Nordic region. Asylum seekers in particular are drawn by Sweden's robust economy and tradition of helping refugees. The country ranks fourth in the number of asylum seekers and second relative to its population out of 44 industrialised nations, according to U.N. figures. Picture taken June 8, 2014.
