A black flag belonging to the Islamic State is seen in the Syrian town of Kobani, as pictured from the Turkish-Syrian border near the southeastern town of Suruc October 9, 2014. Islamic State fighters have seized more than a third of the Syrian border town of Kobani despite U.S.-led air strikes targeting them in and around the town, a monitoring group said on Thursday. They moved into two districts on Wednesday in a three-week battle that Kurdish defenders say will end in a massacre and give the militants a garrison on the Turkish border if they win. Pro-democracy protesters argue with a man (C) as he walks away from an area blocked by protesters outside the government headquarters office in Hong Kong October 9, 2014. Democratic lawmakers in Hong Kong demanded anti-graft officers investigate a $6.4 million business payout to Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying on Thursday, as political fallout grows from massive student-led protests calling for democracy in the Chinese-controlled city. The controversy ratchets up the pressure on the pro-Beijing leader just days after tens of thousands of people occupied the streets of the Asian financial centre and called for Leung to step down. Mexico captured the leader of the once-feared Juarez Cartel in the country's restive north on Thursday, the second drug kingpin to fall in just over a week, a government source said. Carrillo, 51, long-time head of the Juarez Cartel, was a fierce rival of Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and the world's most wanted drug boss until his capture in February. Foad, the brother of 15 year-old Nora who left her home in Avignon for Syria nine months ago, shows a portrait he took last September on his cell phone as he attends an interview with Reuters in Paris, October 6, 2014. Foad, a French truck driver of Moroccan origin, travelled alone through war-torn Syria to rescue his 15-year-old sister from an Islamist group she said was holding her captive. But when they finally stood face to face, in tears, she would not leave. Foad is convinced that his sister Nora, whom he described as an impressionable teen who loved Disney movies before leaving for Syria one afternoon in January, stayed on because she was threatened with execution by the French-speaking commander, or emir, of the group she joined. The former high school student is among dozens of European girls, many of them her age, living with such groups in Syria - an aspect of the conflict that is beginning to worry European governments previously more focused on the flow of young men to join the ranks of Islamic state and other armed militias. Printouts of Ayotzinapa Teacher Training College students, missing after last month's deadly clashes in Iguala, are plastered on a Palo Blanco tollbooth along a road leading to Acapulco, during a blockage by trainee teachers of the United Front of Public Guerrero State Teacher Training Schools (FUNPEG), October 9, 2014. Thousands marched in Mexican cities on Wednesday to demand the government find out what happened to dozens of missing students, who are feared to have been massacred by gang members and police. The students from the teachers' college went missing after they clashed with police in Iguala in the volatile, gang-ridden state of Guerrero on September 26. A mass grave was found near the town over the weekend, full of charred human remains. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto vowed on Monday to identify those behind the massacre and make sure they face justice. Francis Ng, 19, a lifeguard sub-contractor poses in Mongkok shopping district in Hong Kong October 7, 2014. "We have a team of 30 to 40 volunteers ready for the rescue. During my shift in the past eight days I have treated seven." Ng said, "Life is more important than politics. I am neutral." Reuters photographers Carlos Barria and Bobby Yip photographed protestors and details of life on the barricades, asking demonstrators what their role was in the movement, and what they wanted to happen. These two elements combine to form a portrait of the protests. Student protesters galvanized Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement with their energy, bringing tens of thousands of people on to the streets in a show of defiance against Beijing. As events of the last 12 days prove, however, sustaining momentum is difficult, and whatever success protesters had in pressuring the government by disrupting city life, they will always come up against a formidable foe - mainland China. Protest numbers have dwindled markedly to a few hundred people at times, and the focus for pro-democracy activists has switched to talks scheduled for Friday with key officials in the Hong Kong administration. A female pro-Russian rebel stands on a truck as she gets ready to take position near the Sergey Prokofiev International Airport during fighting with Ukrainian government forces in the town of Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, October 4, 2014. Before fighting broke out in eastern Ukraine, Irina was a croupier in a casino who never dreamt of taking up arms. Now she is gambling with her life. Using the nom de guerre "Gaika", a cartoon character that translates as Gadget, she has joined an artillery unit in a pro-Russian separatist group fighting government forces. "When your home is being destroyed, everything that is dear to you, friends, work ... It's about character. Girls who go into combat are real Russian women," she said in an interview, explaining why she joined up. It has proved a tough experience but she has no regrets. Picture taken October 4.
