A refugee prepares to hand over a toddler to a volunteer lifeguard as a half-sunken catamaran carrying around 150 refugees, most of them Syrians, arrives after crossing part of the Aegean sea from Turkey on the Greek island of Lesbos, October 30, 2015. There were no casaulties amongst the refugees who were travelling on the catamaran, according to a Reuters witness. The death toll from drownings at sea has mounted recently as weather in the Aegean has taken a turn for the worse, turning wind-whipped sea corridors into deadly passages for thousands of refugees crossing from Turkey to Greece. Francis Ng, 19, a lifeguard sub-contractor poses in Mongkok shopping district in Hong Kong October 7, 2014. "We have a team of 30 to 40 volunteers ready for the rescue. During my shift in the past eight days I have treated seven." Ng said, "Life is more important than politics. I am neutral." Reuters photographers Carlos Barria and Bobby Yip photographed protestors and details of life on the barricades, asking demonstrators what their role was in the movement, and what they wanted to happen. These two elements combine to form a portrait of the protests. Student protesters galvanized Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement with their energy, bringing tens of thousands of people on to the streets in a show of defiance against Beijing. As events of the last 12 days prove, however, sustaining momentum is difficult, and whatever success protesters had in pressuring the government by disrupting city life, they will always come up against a formidable foe - mainland China. Protest numbers have dwindled markedly to a few hundred people at times, and the focus for pro-democracy activists has switched to talks scheduled for Friday with key officials in the Hong Kong administration. A man wades in the sea at Ipanema Beach during sunset in Rio de Janeiro June 4, 2014. Rio de Janeiro, with its white beaches, blue ocean and jungle-covered mountains, is still the place that comes to mind when people think of Brazil. Soccer fans coming to Rio for the World Cup will be too late for the city's famed Carnival bash, but they'll also miss the energy-sapping Southern Hemisphere summer heat. By all means visit tourist favorites such as Pao de Acucar (Sugar Loaf Mountain) and the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado, but here are places that locals enjoy, too. Despite its party reputation, Rio is also a daytime city. Obsessed with health and good looks, many Cariocas, as the locals are known, work hard to keep tan and fit. The beach is best at late morning and late afternoon. The most popular spots are between Posto 7 and Posto 10 in Ipanema. Each posto is a lifeguard station whose number serves as a beach address. Shortly after daybreak Tuesday in the Twin Cities, thermometers had inched their way up to anywhere from 8 to 13 below zero. The National Weather Service (NWS) said Tuesday's high is expected to be near zero. A deadly blast of arctic air shattered decades-old temperature records as it enveloped the eastern United States on Tuesday, snarling air, road and rail travel, driving energy prices higher and overwhelming shelters for homeless people. At least eight deaths have been reported across the country because of the polar air mass sweeping over North America during the past few days. Philippine coast guard divers retrieve a body from the capsized ferry, MV Princess of Stars, off Sibuyan island, central Philippines June 24, 2008. Divers found ghostly white bodies floating head up inside the sunken passenger ferry on Tuesday raising fears of a mass grave below the waves. The ferry had over 800 people on board when it capsized and flipped over in huge swells off the coast of Sibuyan island when Typhoon Fengshen hit on Saturday. REUTERS/Romeo Ranoco (PHILIPPINES)

SURF LIFESAVER WATCHES SWIMMERS AT SYDNEY'S BONDI BEACH.
Lifesaver Paul Booth watches swimmers between the flagged area at Sydney's famous Bondi Beach December 20, 2000. With about 60 million visitors using Australia's more than 7,000 accessible beaches each year, a recent poll has found that only 44 percent of Australians will swim between the flags marking the area patrolled by lifesavers, with males being twice as likely as females to swim outside the designated area. The Surf Life Saving Australia is one of the largest volunteer organsiations in the world, whose 98,000 members rescued over 10,000 people last summer on Australian beaches, and gave out 252,000 individual warnings to swimmers, an increase of 40 percent on last year. Surf lifesavers (L-R) Brenton Parry, Paul Booth and Trent Serafini keep watch at Sydney's Bondi Beach August 23, 2000. Australian surf lifesavers will be on high alert at Sydney's idyllic beaches in the lead-up to the Olympics, worried that overseas tourists unfamiliar with rough surf might drown. To cope with the influx of thousands ofvisitors, surf patrols will be doubled on many beaches and the surf season will be brought forward a month to the first weekend in September.
