Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
A man engulfed by a swarm of desert locusts, stands on top of a hill near Nanyuki, Kenya, January 30, 2021. Reuters photographer Baz Ratner: "Locusts invaded eastern Africa after unusual weather patterns, exacerbated by climate change, created ideal conditions for waking dormant eggs. In Kenya, it had been decades since locusts had been seen, and they were now devastating crops and vegetation in a region that already suffers from food insecurity. It was very difficult finding the swarms as they can travel up to 150 km (93 miles) a day, through areas that lack roads. In some cases by the time we arrived, the swarms had already moved on. But I was lucky to find a scout who knew the terrain. Working inside a locust swarm feels similar to standing inside a snow or hailstorm, only the sound of the locusts flying and hitting the car is much louder. They have the tendency to stick to clothes. On this day, we were traveling along a dirt road when we found the locust swarm. I noticed an armed wildlife ranger standing on top of a hill, with locusts flying in circles around him. I took this picture using a long lens from the bottom of the hill. I think by having the scale of a single figure, the picture illustrates the unbelievable size of a locust swarm and how this age-old infestation still affects the region." Jackline Bosibori wept when she found out she was pregnant. The 17-year-old's mother, who is raising six kids alone, collapsed in their one-room home. They had been repeatedly threatened with eviction and couldn't afford another mouth to feed. "If I was in school, this could have not happened," said Bosibori, who wants to become a lawyer. With schools closed due to the coronavirus pandemic and her mother out selling vegetables on the roadside, Bosibori got involved with a man in his twenties. When she told him she was pregnant, he stopped answering her calls. Global lockdowns could lead to rising rates of adolescent pregnancy, non-governmental organisations working on reproductive health have warned. In Kenya, some preliminary data suggests that is happening. REUTERS/Monicah Mwangi TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY SEARCH "KENYA LOCKDOWN PREGNANCIES" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES.

The Wider Image: Sinking shoreline threatens millions in Indonesia
Experts say scores of villages and towns along Indonesia's shoreline are being inundated because of a grim combination of man-made environmental destruction and climate change. Roughly 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level and a new sea wall has had to be built in a bid to hold back the waves. Indonesia, an archipelago of thousands of islands, has about 81,000 km (50,331 miles) of coastline, making it particularly vulnerable to climate change. It is also home to more than a fifth of the world's mangrove forests, which naturally help keep the tides out. But only 3 million hectares of mangroves remain, down from nearly double that three decades ago, according to Wetlands International. For years, coastal communities have chopped down the mangrove forests to clear the way for fish and shrimp farms, and for rice paddies. In some places, hundreds of metres of coast that used to be lined with mangroves have now been swallowed up by the sea. The government has scrambled to work with environmental groups to replant mangroves, build dykes and relocate some people. But many residents, mostly poor fishermen and vendors, are either reluctant to leave their old family homes or simply have nowhere to go further inland on crowded Java. The Wider Image: Hyenas spark admiration, not fear, in Ethiopia's Harar city
Hyenas roam the streets of the ancient walled city of Harar in eastern Ethiopia every night, seeking scraps of meat to drag to the nearby caves. But residents are not afraid. A family chosen by the town to feed the animals is not daunted by the task despite the dangers that are associated with coming into close quarters with such wild animals. Abbas Yusuf, known as Hyena Man, learnt to feed the hyenas from his father, Yusuf Mume Salleh, who fed them for 45 years before passing the job to his son 13 years ago. "Hyenas have never attacked the people of Harar after my father started feeding them, unless you harm their babies," Abbas Yusuf said. "My father is always thankful that I continued the good work he started and I will pass it onto my children when I grow old." His work is now an attraction, drawing in tourists who came to see the city's ancient mosques nestled within its old stone walls. REUTERS/Tiksa Negeri SEARCH "NEGERI HYENA" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Greece crisis: one family's struggle
The Argyros family are emblematic of the poverty in Greece after years of austerity demanded by the country's international creditors. Five years since abandoning their barren Aegean island of Leros for Athens, they are trapped in a vicious cycle of unemployment and debt. Kostas Argyros, 35, picks up only occasional work as an odd-job man and his 30-year-old wife Olga, a nurse, has been unemployed for a nearly decade. They live in a tiny, 49-square-metre apartment with their four small children and burn wood to heat their home in winter. The life they had hoped for appears as far away as ever.
