The consumate Detroit huckster, Lee A. Iacocca, [who brought America the Ford Mustang, Chrysler K-car and minivan returned to Detroit on February 10 and annouced plans to sell] 50,000 electrically powered bicycles a year starting late this summer. Iacocca, now chairman of EV Global Motors Co., [also unveiled an alliance with Energy Conversion Devices Inc., a battery company headed by former General Motors Chairman Robert Stemple. In addition to bicycles, EV Global wants to produce a variety of Light Electric Transportation Systems (LETS.), including tandems, pedicabs, scooters and maybe small four-wheel neighbourhood vehicles].

Chairman Lee Iacocca (C), and Energy Conversion Devices (ECD) President & CEO Stanford Ovshinsky (R), inventor of the advanced nickle metal-hydride (NiMH) battery, pose with the EV Global Motors' (EVG) first product, an electric bicycle, February 10 after the two former auto leaders announced plans to join forces in the expanding electric vehicle market. Under their agreement, Stemple, chairman of ECD, and Iacocca, chairman of EVG, will team with Ovshinsky to bring practical, affordable, pollution free personal transportation to the public.
