Resident Ernie Mayes, 89, has his eyes checked by Optometrist in his flat at the Colbrooke House care facility run by a private company working on behalf of the local government and housing association in southeast London February 13, 2015. The provision of care for those who can no longer look after themselves but do not require a place in hospital is one of the biggest problems facing the state-funded National Health Service. The involvement of the private sector in critical services remains a contentious issue in Britain after large outsourcers failed in previous high profile contracts. People sit on beds while waiting for treatment at a hospital after undergoing cataract removals from a free eye surgery camp, in the northern Indian city of Amritsar December 5, 2014. Fifteen Indians lost their sight after a doctor used suspected infected equipment to remove cataracts at the free eye surgery camp, the latest incident to highlight the dangers of shoddy medical treatment in the country. She thought about becoming a nun before she realised she wanted children. She says "I know I'm in a non-Muslim country and so I try to respect the rules. Sometimes people say nice things about my children or they smile at me and I try to smile back at them. I know they can't see my face but I hope they know I'm smiling with my eyes." An Orthodox monk waits to be examined inside a medical centre which has been set up by volunteers at the headquarters of the Athens Medical Association with the contribution of the Greek Orthodox Church in Athens May 25, 2012. Greece's rundown state hospitals are cutting off vital drugs, limiting non-urgent operations and rationing even basic medical materials for exhausted doctors as a combination of economic crisis and political stalemate strangle health funding. With Greece now in its fifth year of deep recession, trapped under Europe's biggest public debt burden and dependent on international help to keep paying its bills, the effects are starting to bite deeply into vital services.
