Marc Sandlin (L) holds a four-prong hook as Rene Lieurance (R) keeps a look out while they help their friend Paul Calcaterra (not shown) cull older alligators from a breeding pond north of Okeechobee, Florida October 25, 2006. They were culling the older animals so that they can re-stock the pond with a younger, more fertile population. Calcaterra owns a 170-acre facility north of Okeechobee, Florida housing 14 breeding ponds and grow-out houses holding approximately 17,000 alligators. Paul Calcaterra (L) takes aim at a large alligator while Doug Werk (center) and Rene Lieurance hold the rope as they cull older alligators from a breeding pond in a 170-acre facility north of Okeechobee, Florida October 25, 2006. Calcaterra, who owns the facility, will be re-stocking the pond with younger, more fertile alligators after his annual egg production has dropped from 1500 eggs 8 years ago to 500 this summer forcing him to purchase hatchlings which have doubled in price in the past 2 years.
