The U.S. government offered their help in search and rescue operations for survivors of the sunken ferry. Divers scouted for bodies in first-class cabins on the capsized ferry in the Philippines on Wednesday looking for more than 700 people still missing in the disaster. Hundreds of passengers were feared trapped inside the Princess of the Stars when it ran aground and flipped over in waves as big as houses off the central island of Sibuyan during Typhoon Fengshen on Saturday. Submerged boats lie in a bay at Yuzhno-kurilsk settlement on Kunashir, part of a disputed chain of islands known as the Southern Kuriles in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan, June 20, 2008. Four islands of this sparsely populated chain in the Pacific were seized by the Soviet Union after it declared war on Japan on August 8, 1945. The dispute has prevented Russia and Japan from signing a peace treaty ending World War Two and has overshadowed relations for more than 60 years. Most people in the islands, close to oil and gas production regions of Russia, depend on fishing for their livelihood. REUTERS/Yuri Maltsev (RUSSIA)
