Tourists bathe on a river at the top of Roraima Mount, near Venezuela's border with Brazil January 15, 2015. A mysterious table-topped mountain on the Venezuela-Brazil border that perplexed 19th century explorers and inspired "The Lost World" novel is attracting ever more modern-day adventurers. Once impenetrable to all but the local Pemon indigenous people, now several thousand trekkers a year make the six-day hike across Venezuela's savannah, through rivers, and up a narrow path that scales Mount Roraima's 600-meter cliff-faces. While that is a help to Venezuela's tottering tourism industry and brings revenues to local communities, it is also scattering a prehistoric landscape with unwanted litter. A view of salt ponds at the Maras mines in Cuzco December 3, 2014. Salt has been obtained in Maras since pre-Incan times by evaporating highly salty local subterranean stream water. The water is intricately channelled through constructions, flowing gradually down onto several hundred ancient terraced ponds. From each pond, a local member of the mine cooperative can produce 150 to 200 kilos per month which can be sold in the markets at $0.34 per kilogram, according to miners.

Locals search for rubies in waste waters produced from a nearby ruby mine in Mogok February 28, 2014. Mogok, also known as the Ruby Land, is home to the world-famous Myanmar ruby. Residents from Mogok and nearby areas used to mine rubies for generations, usually on a manageable scale with traditional manual methods, until it was restricted due to joint ventures between the ruling government and its close business associates about 20 years ago. Unscrupulous mining by joint ventures, using heavy machinery, has left the town with dumps and craters. According to official data compiled by the state-run Central Statistical Organisation, the total ruby production in the country was over 19 million kilograms in the 2012-2013 (April/March) fiscal year and over 43 million kilograms in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. An aerial view of the construction site of a hydroelectric dam along the Teles Pires river, a tributary of the Amazon, near the city of Alta Floresta, Para state, June 19, 2013. The Amazon rainforest is being eaten away at by deforestation, much of which takes place as areas are burnt by large fires to clear land for agriculture. Initial data from Brazil's space agency suggests that destruction of the vast rainforest - the largest in the world - spiked by more than a third over the past year, wiping out an area more than twice the size of the city of Los Angeles. If the figures are borne out by follow-up data, they would confirm fears of scientists and environmental activists who warn that farming, mining and Amazon infrastructure projects, coupled with changes to Brazil's long-standing environmental policies, are reversing progress made against deforestation. Environmental issues will be under the spotlight as a United Nations Climate Change Conference opens in Warsaw, Poland, November 11. Picture taken on June 19, 2013. Scientists walk along the west flank of the Huayna Potosi mountain, some 27 km (17 miles) northwest of La Paz January 29, 2013. Japanese and Bolivian scientists are studying the shrinking of glaciers in several of the peaks in the Cordillera Real, a section of the Andes Mountains located east of La Paz, where studies show a loss of approximately 43 percent of its glaciers. Their work also shows a loss of about one meter per year in the thickness of the glaciers due to melting. Picture taken January 29, 2013. A typhoid outbreak in Harare and Chitungwiza has seen over 150 cases reported and at least another 20 detained for treatment. The outbreak was attributed to contaminated water which continued to worsen in the city as people are now using wells and other unprotected sources of water for consumption, which are believed to be contaminated. Youths bathe in a stream at the Valley of Springs near the Jordan River July 16, 2012. The Biblical river, which has inspired countless spirituals and folk songs, is just a narrow stream in many parts - polluted and stagnant. But that's about to change. Thanks to desalination and wastewater recycling, there is more fresh water to go around and the Jordan will slowly be returned to its former glory. Picture taken July 16, 2012. A stream polluted with dangerous metal traces from previous mining exploitations is seen near an old mine entrance in Rosia Montana, 428 km (266 miles) northwest of Bucharest, October 4, 2011. Rosia Montana town, made up of 16 villages that dot the slopes along the river Rosia, has hundred-year-old churches and houses, cemeteries and ancient Roman mine galleries. It also has gold. But for those who live here, that is more of a bane than anything else. Canada's Gabriel Resources wants to build Europe's largest open cast gold mine in Rosia Montana, a 15-year quest that has put the area at the centre of a national debate between heritage and development. Dominican women of Haitian origin wash clothes in a stream near the road known as La Internacional that divides Hispaniola island into the Dominican Republic to the east, and Haiti to the west, in Dajabon Province, May 13, 2012. The border of the two countries that share an island but have historically tense relations that have included wars and massacres, is 388 km (241 miles) long and bisects a region of deep poverty where the trade imbalance favors the Dominican Republic by more than 100 to 1, according to official estimates. Despite their cultural differences many Haitians have migrated across the border seeking jobs, swelling the Haitian population in the Dominican Republic to over 800,000, almost ten percent of the Dominican total.
