Students hold a HEPA filter as they prepare to put it on a fan at a workshop to learn how to make the DIY air purifier at a college in Beijing October 23, 2014. Smart Air, a company which invented the DIY air filter, said that their DIY device, which combines a basic household fan with a simple HEPA filter can reduce particulate air pollution indoors at low-cost. Awareness of the dangers of Beijing's skies is on the rise, thanks to growing data on its air quality. China will "declare war on pollution," Premier Li Keqiang told parliament in an opening address in 2014. A tougher environmental law took effect on January 1, while a new environment minister took charge on Friday. REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon (CHINA - Tags: POLITICS SOCIETY ENVIRONMENT BUSINESS)

People assemble home made air purifiers during a workshop organized by Smart Air Filters at a local coffee shop in Shanghai April 10, 2014. Thomas Talhelm, a PhD student in cultural psychology at the University of Virginia, and founder of Smart Air Filter, began experimenting with HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters and a simple plastic fan to remove tiny but hazardous particulates, called PM 2.5, from the air indoors. His air purifier kits, costing just 200RMB ($32) compared to top-of-the-line purifiers that cost up to $8,000, according to organizers, provide a low-cost solution to China's air pollution problem. Experts said chronic exposure to particle pollution can aggravate asthma, increase the risk of heart disease and even shorten life. Despite decades of conflict in Afghanistan, and several recent militant attacks, the country's capital Kabul is home to a vibrant youth scene of musicians, artists, athletes and activists. Shopping malls and cafes stand in the city, which is nonetheless beset by infrastructure problems and instability. Afghanistan is preparing for an election on April 5 that should mark the first democratic transfer of power in the country's history, but it has been hit by a tide of violence as the Islamist Taliban movement has ordered its fighters to disrupt the vote and threatened to kill anyone who participates. Afghan female prisoners work in a tailoring workshop at Herat prison, western Afghanistan, December 8, 2013. Foreign aid donors have ensured regular meals, heating and healthcare in Herat's prison for women, but those arrangements are now at risk and fears that its female prisoners may be abandoned are growing as the prison's main benefactor, the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team, winds down operations alongside most foreign troops. The government has shown little interest in protecting hard-won rights for women and most of its limited funds will be devoted to fighting a growing Taliban insurgency.
