Tens of thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East and Africa, use the Balkans route to get into the European Union, passing from Greece to Macedonia and Serbia and then to western Europe. After walking across the border into Macedonia to the small local station of Gevgelia, migrants pile onto an overcrowded four-carriage train in sweltering heat, young infants among them, to travel about 200 km north. Items selected for phthalate level testing are seen during a demonstration at a laboratory in Berlin in this combination of four pictures taken October 8, 2010. Phthalates are a range of chemicals regularly used to make plastics more flexible. In recent decades these colourless, odourless chemicals - there are about 25 common types - have permeated the very fabric of our society, right down to the shoes on our feet. They are in the air we breathe and the paint on our office walls, they soften the vinyl floors of kitchens and bathrooms, they put the flex in our shower curtains and electric cables. A report published last week by a consortium of 140 environment groups shows that these potentially risky chemicals are present in dozens of everyday plastic items for sale by European retailers -- from shoes to erasers, from pencil cases to sex toys. Sinelizwi Gxotelwa, 7, brushes his teeth outside the family shack in Cape Town's Khayelitsha township February 24, 2010. Sinelizwi is one of five grandchildren cared for by Thenjiwe Madzinga, 66, including four who were orphaned when Madzinga's own daughter died from AIDS in 2002. Some 5.5 million people live with HIV/AIDS in South Africa -- more than in any other country -- placing a heavy burden on a society still struggling with the legacy of Apartheid. Special care is given to around 15,000 green and hawksbill baby turtles hatched and housed at the navy's conservation center each year. Once the baby turtles' shells are big and strong enough to protect them from various predators at about six-months-old the young turtles are released to the sea. Picture taken June 16, 2009. Sticks used as traditional toothbrushes are displayed for sale in Senegal's capital Dakar, June 18, 2007. Cut from wild trees and shrubs in the bush, this is the African toothbrush. Its users swear it is much more natural, effective -- and cheaper -- than the prettily packaged but pricey dental products on sale in pharmacies and supermarkets.
