The Wider Image: Families around the world join war on plastic
Eri Sato (R) poses with her husband Tatsuya and three-month-old daughter Sara at their home in Yokohama, Japan, May 23, 2018. "I think there's no escaping plastic waste. I see it on the streets, in the mountains, underwater. It's literally everywhere." Eri said. "In our family, we try to reduce our carbon footprint wherever we can. We're very conscious of the impacts our choices can have on the environment. First, we try to reduce consumption of plastics. This mentality is applied to both daily groceries, clothing, and many other products. When we have to consume, we try to keep it minimal. Recycling is generally the last option for us, and definitely not the first," she added. "Instead of the disposable plastic bottles, we've switched to reusable bottles. We've also gone to shampoo bars instead of bottled shampoo. Our toothbrush is made from bamboo and we use reusable shopping bags whenever we can." REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon

Fumio Sasaki's one-room Tokyo apartment is so stark friends liken it to an interrogation room. He owns three shirts, four pairs of trousers, four pairs of socks and a meagre scattering of various other items. Money isn't the issue. The 36-year-old editor has made a conscious lifestyle choice, joining a growing number of Japanese deciding that less is more. Influenced by the spare aesthetic of Japan's traditional Zen Buddhism, these minimalists buck the norm in a fervently consumerist society by dramatically paring back their possessions. Sasaki, once a passionate collector of books, CDs and DVDs, became tired of keeping up with trends two years ago. REUTERS/Thomas Peter SEARCH "MINIMALISM" FOR THIS STORY. Fuji Heavy Industries' engineer Toshio Takahashi (R) points out the solar panel on the rooftop of a Subaru Hybrid-power Vehicle named 'Elten' at Eco Japan, exhibiting the world's latest technology for energy conservation and related environmental uses, in Kyoto December 4 as a global warming conference is underway in the western Japanese city. The car employs two types of batteries and two different power sources using a highly-efficient energy recycling system. The super efficient gasoline engine engages at high engine load conditions, and an electric motor engages at low load conditions to minimize power loss and regenerate power accordingly with driving conditions. Eco Japan opens to the public December 5.
