Syrian Tulin Hashemi waits for a job interview at a hotel in Vidigal slum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, September 22, 2015. Tulin, whose mother arrived two days ago, has been living in Brazil for two months. As she does not speak Portuguese, Tulin says it is difficult for her to find a job and therefore she is staying at the slum as it is one of the cheaper neighbourhoods to live in. According to the National Committee for Refugees (CONARE), 2,077 people fleeing the Syrian civil war have settled in Brazil, whilst a quarter of the 8,400 refugees in the Latin American country come from Syria. Cheryl Barrett (L), from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, interviews job seeker Ricardo Scarello at the fourth Annual Job Fair for Individuals with Visual Impairments in Cambridge, Massachusetts October 16, 2014. The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell to a 14-year low last week, a positive signal for the labor market that could counter doubts over whether the economy is shifting into a higher gear. Organizers of the job fair said that unemployment among those with visual impairments is over 70 percent. Casey Caldwell screens Chris Harris (R) for a job with Yates Services at the Tennessee Career Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, December 10, 2011. The United Auto Workers union is staking its future on the kind of struggle it hasn?t waged since the 1930s: a massive drive to organize hostile factories. This time, the target is foreign car makers, whose workers have rebuffed the union repeatedly. Specifically, Reuters has learned, the union is going after U.S. plants owned by German manufacturers Volkswagen AG and Daimler AG , seen as easier nuts to crack than the Japanese and South Koreans. Japan already has one Lost Generation of youth stuck in insecure jobs as part-timers, contract workers and temps after failing to find steady employment when they graduated from high school or college during a hiring Ice Age from 1994 to 2004. Now the country's leaders worry that a still-fragile recovery from Japan's worst recession in 60 years and cautious corporate hiring plans are putting a second batch of youth at risk, raising prospects of a further waste of human resources the country can ill afford as it struggles with an ageing, shrinking population.
