A traditional Dhow boat is seen at the empty shore in Paje, a tourist beach in eastern Zanzibar island October 28, 2005. It is the height of the tourist season in Zanzibar, but a mere handful of foreigners are enjoying the azure waters and white sands of Paje beach. That is unusual for Tanzania's glittering Indian Ocean islands -- a beacon for many tourists wrapping up a holiday after a tough hike up Mount Kilimanjaro or a game reserve tour. Tourism players in Paje and elsewhere across the Zanzibar archipelago say the threat of violence at Sunday's vote for the local presidency has temporarily scared away many foreign visitors and their much-needed money. A pair of Scarlet Macaws perch in the bough of a tree May 30, 2003 in Laguna
del Tigre National Park, northern Guatemala. The Macaw is facing extinction
in region by poachers, wildfires and farmers using 'slash and burn'
techniques as they look for more territory. Environmental groups determined
to protect the endangered subspecies are coming under increasing risks and
have even had to pull out staff after being threatened by squatters. The
birds mate for life and have an extremely low reproduction rate. Of the 58
eggs laid this year in el Peru, the bird's main nesting ground, only one

A Scarlet Macaw sits perched in a tree May 30, 2003 in Laguna del Tigre
National Park, northern Guatemala. The Macaw is facing extinction in
reagion by poachers, wildfires and farmers using 'slash and burn'
techniques as they look for more territory. Environmental groups
determined to protect the endangered subspecies are coming under
increasing risks and have even had to pull out staff after being
threatened by squatters. The birds mate for life and have an extremely
low reproduction rate. Of the 58 eggs laid this year in el Peru, the
