wounds and touched sensitive issues of class and corruption in the
Central American nation of 11 million people, more than half of them
Maya Indians often living in deep poverty. Despite rising political
violence this election season spurred by the candidacy of ex-dictator

ANDREAS HAENGGI TALKS WITH HIS SON NICOLAS DURING APPEAL HEARING IN ZACAPA.
Swiss national Andreas Haenggi, 62, talks with his son Nicolas, 23, during their appeals hearing in Zacapa, February 12. A three-man appeals court in Zacapa, 90 miles (148 km) northeast of Guatemala City, ruled there was insufficient evidence to allow a 12-year sentence handed down on Andreas for allegedly "promoting" drug-trafficking. "I'm happy with the sentence. I wish my son had been acquitted too, but it hasn't been like that. I'm satisfied," Haenggi told journalists.

SWISS AMBASSADOR SHAKES HANDS WITH HAENGGI.
Swiss ambassador to Guatemala Christian Hanswierth (R) shakes hands with Andreas Haenggi after he and his son Nicolas were released February 12, as Guatemalan attorney Fernando Linares (L) looks on. The Haenggis were released on appeal after it was argued that Andreas had been convicted on insufficient evidence. Nicolas' sentence was reduced from 20 years to 3, commutable to a fine, which Nicolas said he could not afford to pay. Haenggi was the manager of Nestle's factory in Antigua, Guatemala, when he was arrested in August, 1997. The Haenggis and four co-defendants were accused of trying to smuggle 13 kilos of cocaine to Europe, hidden in a shipment of ornamental plants.
