TO GO WITH STORY BC-AUSTRIA-MINE - The crater 100 meter wide, is the visible result of a mine cave-in four weeks ago in which 11 men, one of whom was later saved, were buried under tonnes of mud and water. Workmen are now filling the crater with gravel, and grass will grow and hide it, but the memory of Austria's worst postwar mining disaster will not go away that easily. PICTURE TAKEN AUG 4, 1998.

GERMAN MINE RESCUE TEAM MEMBERS CHECK THEIR EQUIPTMENT IN LASSING.
German mine rescue team members check some of their equipment after they descended into a collapsed mine to inspect it's condition but were forced to return to the surface by water and mud August 2. Rescuers drilled into a hollow where 10 miners might be and plan to lower a camera into the cavity to find out if anyone is alive. The 10 men were buried in a massive cave-in on July 17 after descending into the mine in an attempt to find 24-year-old Georg Hainzl, trapped 60 metres (200 feet) down by a smaller collapse a few hours before. Hainzl was rescued from his 10-day ordeal in surprisingly good health last Sunday.

Drilling work is underway July 31 at a magnesium silicate mine in Lassing, Austria which collapsed in a landslide July 17. Rescuers said they expected to find out within hours if ten Austrian miners are dead or alive after drilling reached a depth of 118 metres in the morning. International experts are working together with Austrian authorities on a minimal chance to recover ten miners from some 120 metres underground after a landslide had hit the magnesium silicate mine.
