Pictures of the Year: Caravans: the new face of migration
Family units from Central America await their turn on the Mexico side of Rio Grande river as Eliani Valentin, a five-month-old girl from Honduras, is held by a man after a group used a raft to illegally cross into the U.S. from Mexico in Granjeno, Texas, October 5, 2018. Reuters photographer Adrees Latif: "After covering immigration for months in the Rio Grande Valley, I was finally able to pinpoint locations where family units were crossing the Rio Grande river into the U.S. illegally from Mexico. On this particular day, I witnessed migrants using a raft to cross the river as others waited on the Mexican side for their turn. When this group started to exit the raft, I was stunned to see a five month old baby, as her mother holding a bottle of milk, came ashore. The group, who were seeking asylum, were soon apprehended and taken into custody." REUTERS/Adrees Latif SEARCH "IMMIGRATION POY" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "REUTERS POY" FOR ALL BEST OF 2018 PACKAGES. A sign is seen in Granjeno, Texas
A sign is seen in Granjeno, Texas April 2, 2013. Brooks County has become an epicentre for illegal immigrant deaths in Texas. In 2012, sheriff's deputies found 129 bodies there, six times the number recorded in 2010. Most of those who died succumbed to the punishing heat and rough terrain that comprise the ranch lands of south Texas. Many migrants spend a few days in a "stash house", such as the Casa del Migrante, in Reynosa, Mexico, and many are ignorant of the treacherous journey ahead. Picture taken April 2, 2013.
