Reuters photographer Adrees Latif: "After covering immigration for months in the Rio Grande Valley, I was finally able to pinpoint locations where family units were crossing the Rio Grande river into the U.S. illegally from Mexico. On this particular day, I witnessed migrants using a raft to cross the river as others waited on the Mexican side for their turn. When this group started to exit the raft, I was stunned to see a five month old baby, as her mother holding a bottle of milk, came ashore. The group, who were seeking asylum, were soon apprehended and taken into custody." REUTERS/Adrees Latif SEARCH "IMMIGRATION POY" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "REUTERS POY" FOR ALL BEST OF 2018 PACKAGES. Pictures of the Year: Caravans: the new face of migration
Luis Acosta holds 5-year-old Angel Jesus, both from Honduras, as a caravan of migrants from Central America en route to the United States crossed through the Suchiate River into Mexico from Guatemala in Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico, October 29, 2018. Reuters photographer Adrees Latif: "When I arrived to the scene, most of the migrants had already made it to the Mexican side of the river and were resting and drying their clothes along the bank. In the river, dozens of migrant men had locked arms to make a snake-like human cordon from the Guatemalan side to Mexico, so no-one would get swept by its powerful pull. With one camera in hand and a 35 mm lens, I broke into the cordon to photograph the last group of migrants crossing. A family that had made it to the middle of the river was handing their children to other men to help them reach the shore. As a man grabbed the boy in front of me, I followed him, photographing, as he carried him to safety. Moments later, the last set of migrants crossed, and the men who had locked hands in the cordon all swam towards Mexico and started celebrating that everyone in the caravan had made it safely. This photograph begs the question: why would a family leave home and not only risk their own lives but also the lives of their children by doing such extraordinary things? What propels someone to walk without knowing where they will next break bread or quench their thirst?." REUTERS/Adrees Latif SEARCH "IMMIGRATION POY" FOR THIS STORY. A Picture and its Story: Honduran migrant flees tear gas with her children
Reuters photographer Kim Kyung-Hoon: "After nearly two weeks of documenting the harrowing journey of a caravan of mostly Central American migrants headed towards the U.S.-Mexican border, I snapped a picture I will never forget. In the shot, taken on Sunday, you can see Honduran mother Maria Meza, 40, grabbing the thin arms of her two 5-year-old twin daughters Cheili and Saira as they frantically run from a tear gas canister spewing fumes. Cheili is seen in diapers, Saira barefoot, while their mother wears a t-shirt showing the smiling sisters from the Disney hit "Frozen," a movie I've seen many times with my own daughter. Mesa's 12-year-old daughter, Jamie, is behind her mother in the photo, also running away from the approaching gas. In the frantic moments after the canisters hit the ground, the acrid smell was everywhere and I could see children crying, their eyes stung by the gas. "I thought I was going to die with them because of the gas," Meza told my Reuters colleagues a day later, adding that she was shocked U.S. border agents would fire the canisters near women and children. Meza's family had made it to the El Chapparal border crossing, which straddles the Mexican city of Tijuana and San Diego on the U.S. side, after leaving their home in the violent city of San Pedro Sula in northern Honduras two months ago. Meza and her children said they had already spent a week at a Tijuana shelter, but they will likely have to wait much longer for a chance to ultimately plead their case. She said she hopes to be granted asylum in the United States due to rampant crime back home, and if successful will travel to Louisiana, where the girls' father lives." A Picture and its Story: Central American migrants trek north to seek a better life
Luis Acosta holds 5-year-old Angel Jesus, both from Honduras, as a caravan of migrants from Central America en route to the United States crossed through the Suchiate River into Mexico from Guatemala in Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico, October 29, 2018. Adrees Latif: "For the past nine days, I had been following a caravan of over 7,000 migrants from Central America who were making their way north after crossing the Guatemala-Mexico border. Instead of trying to attempt another gate crossing, the migrants had moved towards the Suchiate River to try to cross. Most of the migrants had already made it to the Mexican side of the river and were resting and drying their clothes along the bank. As a man grabbed the girl in front of me, I followed him, photographing, as he carried her to safety. Moments later, the last set of migrants crossed, and the men who had locked hands in the cordon all swam towards Mexico and started celebrating that the caravan had made it. This photograph begs the question: why would a family leave home and not only risk their own lives but also the lives of their children by doing such extraordinary things? What propels someone to walk without knowing where they will next break bread or quench their thirst? It also reminds me of the poem "Home" by Warsan Shire that starts: "No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark." REUTERS/Adrees Latif/File photo SEARCH "LUIS ACOSTA" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Did dams make India's once-in-century floods worse?
Joby Pathrose, a farmer living a kilometre away from the usually languid Periyar river in southern India, was woken in the night by the sound of rushing waters. Hours later his plantations and everything he owned were completely submerged. "There was absolutely no warning from the government side," said Pathrose, describing the devastating flooding that hit his village of Okkal, in Kerala state, on Aug. 15. Pathrose says local authorities had advised his fields were safe, despite the incessant rains that battered Kerala at the peak of the monsoon. More than 5 million people in Kerala were affected and over 200 were killed amid torrential rain and floods in August. The flooding, dubbed the worst to hit the southern state in nearly a century, caused billions of dollars of damage to fields, homes and other infrastructure.
