Jerusalem buzzes with renewed energy in the days before the start of Ramadan, Islam's holy month, when the faithful abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours. There's the bustle to prepare the al-Aqsa Mosque, the 8th-century Muslim shrine in Jerusalem's Old City, for the hundreds of thousands of Muslims who will come to pray. Around the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, shopkeepers stock up on Ramadan essentials, including bright lights for decorations and Korans and prayer beads for recitations. The Wider Image: Waiting half a lifetime for justice in El Salvador
Survivors of 1981's El Mozote massacre are closer than ever to justice after the reopening of an investigation begun more than a quarter-century ago into the army-led killing of about 1,000 people, casting light on a horrific symbol of theÊ unaccountability for atrocities in El Salvador's civil war. The killings went unpunished because of an amnesty law that from 1993 prohibited prosecution of crimes from the war, which between 1980 and 1992 claimed 75,000 lives and led to over 8,000 disappearances. Bodies of El Mozote victims rotted outdoors and many were devoured by animals, while others were buried or burned by soldiers involved in the operation. Survivors could not bury their dead or find closure in justice. But in 1991, Argentine forensic experts began helping to disinter remains to identify the victims, forgotten by politicians and society during decades of official silence. So far they have gathered remains of 400 people, and this year in January their work attracted special attention on the 25th anniversary of El Salvador's 1992 peace accords. A vendor's bags hang on a wall in the early hours of the morning at the Mercato market in Addis Ababa October 8, 2015. Addis Ababa's 'Mercato' - Italian for 'market' - is reputedly the biggest open-air market in Africa, lying in the west of the capital. Supermarkets have sprouted across the city as the metropolis has expanded with Ethiopia's booming economy, but Mercato remains a popular destination for shoppers seeking clothing, electronics and a huge range of other items. It has been around for as long as the city, which was founded at the end of the 19th century, but it took its current form, and its name, from the Italians who invaded Ethiopia in 1935. The Italian occupation ended in 1941. Picture taken October 8, 2015. REUTERS/Tiksa Negeri

A sculpture is seen on the wall of the Mision de Santiago church in Jalpan, in Queretaro state, September 9, 2015. Pope Francis will declare Friar Junipero Serra a saint at a Mass celebrated at the National Shrine in Washington on September 23 during the pontiff’s first visit to the United States. The Franciscan friar from Spain built a series of missions along the Pacific coast in the 18th century, in what is now California, to spread the faith among Native Americans. His advocates say he supported the Indians, introducing cattle and crops to their land. The Vatican has defended Serra against accusations that, as part of the Spanish colonial system, he suppressed Native Americans. Serra’s resting place is inside the Basilica at the Carmel Mission south of San Francisco. REUTERS/Edgard GarridoPICTURE 8 OF 35 FOR WIDER IMAGE STORY "POPE TO CANONISE FRIAR SERRA".
