The mosque has been under reconstruction for many years supported by small contributions gathered from the Jaffa Moslem community. Israel's chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yisrael Lau said he favours opening some mosques located in Israel which were "abandoned" by Arabs during the War of Independence in 1948, such as those located in Caesarea, Beersheba and Tiberias.
