DRESSMAKER BEZERRA CHECKS HER CROCHET AT ROCINHA SHANTYTOWN IN RIO.
Brazilian dressmaker Viviane Bezerra checks her crochet in the cooperative Coopa Roca in the Rocinha shantytown of Rio de Janeiro, April 6, 2004. Dozens of women in a Rio de Janeiro slum that became engulfed in a war between rival drugs traffickers are sewing non-stop for a business project that will show there's more to life there than just violence. The cooperative of 150 seamstresses is known for rescuing from oblivion the traditional "fuxico" technique of drawstring applique used in Brazil's northeast. Many local designers have already used their craftwork, including in bikinis. Now, fuxico applique from Rocinha will adorn lingerie by London-based Agent Provocateur brand, while Dutch furniture designer Tord Boontje will use 250 fabric flowers and crochet work from the slum in the lighting design in Selfridges.
