The Wider Image: Chicken ceremony rooted in ancient rites
A village in southwest China staged a traditional wedding ritual that pits ancient traditions against modern views on animal welfare in a fast changing country. The ceremony held in the ethnic Kam minority village of Gantuan in Guizhou province is based on a tradition dating back some 500 years that was revived and modified in the 1990s for villagers and tourists. The event, known locally as Òsteal the chicken at the drum towerÓ, involves young men competing to be the first to tear apart live birds carried on poles by new brides into the village centre. Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert Del Rosario points to an ancient map on display at a Catholic university in Manila September 11, 2014. The Philippines put on display dozens of ancient maps which officials said showed that China's territorial claims over the South China Sea did not include a disputed shoal at the center of an acrimonious standoff. The Philippines is in dispute with China over parts of the South China Sea, including the Scarborough Shoal, an area believed to be rich in oil and natural gas as well as fisheries resources.
