Mosul, Iraq
A Picture and its Story: The battle for Mosul: urban warfare and civilian exodus
A view of a part of western Mosul, Iraq, May 29, 2017. Alkis Konstantinidis: "It was the second day of my assignment in Mosul and we were driving to join the Iraqi Federal Police forces at their frontline positions. The closer we got to our destination, the more obvious was the impact of the constant warfare. The cityscape was apocalyptic: demolished buildings, burnt cars tipped onto their sides, twisted masses of steel. We reached the frontline on what seemed a quiet day. But even if things appear calm, you have to be on alert about your surroundings. While moving fast from position to position, taking cover behind debris, I noticed a yellow car lying destroyed in the middle of the road ahead of us. I took a few wide-angle shots, which worked best as I was able to get the perspective of the street and the sweeping scale of the destruction. Not a single element of my frame was untouched by the battle. Later that day, I tried to imagine what this street - whose name I couldn't find out as no signs were left standing - would have looked like on a "normal" day some years ago. It appeared to be a market street; people would have crossed it in a hurry, darting between traffic. The mosque in the background would have called the faithful to prayer and it would have been full of different noises: car honks, shop-owners shouting to attract customers, music playing in coffee shops full of people. These everyday sounds had now been replaced by the heavy crump of mortars, artillery, helicopters and the clatter of gun battles. And the memory of a normal day seemed so distant." The Wider Image: Beijing's walking dead on the loose
The post-apocalyptic thriller "Zombie Era" is the latest domestically-produced movie destined for a growing online audience in China. Demand for video streaming of movies and TV shows has opened the door to a new generation of directors like 27-year-old Shen Chenyan. The former cinematographer, who oversees 100 cast members and crew on the Zombie Era set in an abandoned factory near the capital Beijing, said he would have waited years for the chance to direct a traditional cinema release. "The quality and quantity of online movies are going up, so itÕs a great opportunity to try out a few of my own thoughts and to fulfil my intention of becoming a film director." Although China is the worldÕs second largest movie market, the outlook for cinema operators is cloudy after its box-office ended 2016 with its smallest growth in a decade, up just 3.7 percent on the year, at 45.7 billion yuan ($6.6 billion). A picture taken in the 70s compares the place with the current state of a ruined house in the onetime spa and resort town Epecuen, November 5, 2015. Over the past few years the town of Epecuen, located 550 km (341 miles) southwest of Buenos Aires, has been attracting tourists with its eerie apocalyptic atmosphere after a flood submerged it in salt water for more than two decades. Originally a busy lakeside tourist village in the 1920s renowned for its saltwater baths, Epecuen came to a sudden end in November 10, 1985 when a succession of rainy winters caused Lago Epecuen to overflow and water surged through a special retaining wall and into the town. Residents and tourists were forced to evacuate and in just a few days homes and buildings were covered by almost 10 meters (33 feet) of salt water. Now, 30 years on, the water has evaporated and former residents can walk amidst the rusted out ruins of what was once their town. Picture taken November 5, 2015. REUTERS/Enrique Marcarian
