A fried arepa stuffed with meat and cheese is seen in the restaurant in Caracas September 21, 2011. The fillings are wedged into the arepa: a small flatbread that has been a source of nourishment and pride to Venezuelans since Spanish colonialists tried to usurp it centuries ago. The arepa is to Venezuelans what the hamburger is to Americans or the tortilla to Mexicans. Venezuelans purchase a staggering 23 kg (50 lbs) of Harina PAN per person per year, rivaling the quantity of flour used in Mexico's tortillas. Picture taken September 21, 2011. Bread is displayed for sale at a bakery in London
Bread is displayed for sale at a bakery in central London March 24, 2011. British retail sales fell more than expected in February, reversing half of January's rebound with volumes hit by the biggest jump in prices in 17 years which was only partly due to the rise in VAT, official data showed on Thursday. Moreover, prices including fuel leapt at their fastest monthly pace since 1994, up 2.5 percent. Food prices were up at their fastest pace in almost 2 years. Jarina Begum, a street vendor, makes tea at her wooden cart in Dhaka October 14, 2008. In a country where eating on the street is often a health hazard, Begum's food cart offers an appetising, and most importantly clean, option. Begum's small "healthy cart", which serves breakfast and lunch on a bustling Dhaka road, is part of an initiative to clean up street food in a city where statistics show that on average, more than 500 people a day are hospitalised due to contaminated food and water. Lebanese smoke water pipes during Ramadan night at Sheraton hotel in Beirut October 14, 2006. Dozens of Lebanese sit at tables piled with Mediterranean appetisers, putting on sleek golden water pipes and tapping their feet to an Arab pop singer. This typical Ramadan night scene at crowded seaside cafes and restaurants in central Beirut suggests that at least some Lebanese are determined to enjoy themselves despite the recent ordeal of Israel's 34-day war with Hezbollah guerrillas.
