A woman holds a watermelon piece as a salesgirl gives her a plastic bag with artichokes in a greengrocers' shop in downtown Ronda, near Malaga April 30, 2014. The Spanish government raised its 2014 economic growth forecast on Wednesday following a robust start to the year, but is still struggling to persuade voters that a solid recovery is underway as job creation and consumer spending remain anaemic. SAINT PAUL DE LEON, France
An artichoke is seen in a field in the countryside near Saint-Pol-de-Leon, Northern Brittany
An artichoke is seen in a field in the countryside near Saint-Pol-de-Leon, Northern Brittany, November 3, 2013. France's aim to shift nearly one billion euros in European subsidies to help struggling livestock farmers could be stymied by a crisis in the meat processing sector faced with a wave of plant closures in Brittany, leaving more room to competitors. France is the European Union's leader in poultry output and third for pork, with the country's western part hosting the bulk of farmers and industry players, initially attracted by easy access to ports to import feed and boost exports. France is now losing its pole position as Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium gain market shares, even within France itself, by using more efficient tools and often cheaper labour. Marinaleda's cooperative farmers use a tractor to prepare the irrigation system for growing artichokes in a field near Marinaleda, southern Spain, August 15, 2012. Marinaleda's Mayor and Izquierda Unida (IU) Parliamentarian Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo (not pictured), who became a cult hero for staging robberies at supermarkets and giving stolen groceries to the poor sets off this week on a three-week march that could embarrass the government and energise anti-austerity campaigners. He has introduced a cooperative farming system in Marinaleda - population 2,645 - and has repeatedly tried to take over land for farming, the latest target being 1,200 hectares of land owned by the Ministry of Defence.
