A babysitter stands at the entrance of a makeshift home, part of the Nova Tuffy slum, in an abandoned factory in Rio de Janeiro October 17, 2014. Since seven months ago, 1,800 families have been living inside the factory, which they occupied in March, with poor sanitation services and the fear of eviction. The occupants of the factory say they are not included in the housing program "Minha Casa, Minha Vida" (My House, My Life), and they would like to be included by the Brazilian government. The housing program is one of several government initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and social inequality that President Dilma Rousseff has held up as achievements of her administration as she campaigns for re-election. A couple sits on the sand of Sydney's Manly Beach late at night as they watch blue bioluminescent waves July 25, 2014. Filipino nannies stroll with children during their duty hours at a park in Tokyo
Filipino nannies stroll with children during their duty hours at a park in Tokyo November 29, 2013. During the early days of "Abenomics," U.S. businesses were optimistic they could convince Japan's government to make a small change to the nation's tight immigration rules to let more household helpers into the country. But a year after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took office, an idea that some thought might be an easy win for immigration reform while meeting a stated aim of Abe's growth strategy has made no apparent progress. The tangle of issues involved in employing foreign workers as housekeepers or nannies helps to illustrate the labyrinthine task Japan would face if it were to try to tackle much broader immigration reform. There are no clear statistics on the number of foreign household helpers in Japan as many are working informally and those working legally, do so under a broad visa category. But foreign workers themselves say their numbers are shrinking. Picture taken November 29, 2013. Backpackers walk during low tide at Hearson's Cove in Karratha April 18, 2011. Demand for Australian commodities is running white-hot. So too are costs in the country's remote mining towns, to the point where tiny huts or "dongas" can cost as much as a five-star hotel room and backpackers can earn $2,000 a week cleaning them.
