Ornamental carpets, with the portraits of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad (top R), Ernesto "Che" Guevara, Lady Diana and veteran Turkish politician Deniz Baykal (top L) are hanged on the wall of a shop in the border city of Kilis, southeastern Turkey, January 13, 2012. Although Turkey still trades with Syria, it is seeking alternative transport routes to export goods to other countries in the Middle East, which it estimates will cost Syria over $100 million in transport fees annually. Some 60,000 Syrians used to cross the border monthly, providing a contribution of around $1 billion a year to Gaziantep and the economy of the border region. The number of visitors from Syria has now dropped to around 1,000 people a month. Picture taken January 13, 2012. Supporters of Republican People's Party (CHP) waving party flags during an election rally in Yalova March 4, 2009. Party loyalists wave flags and cheer but an air of hopelessness prevails as veteran Turkish opposition leader Deniz Baykal, loser of four national elections, addresses his faithful. Turkey's ruling AK Party expects to retain its 26-point lead in local elections on March 29 partly due to the failings of Baykal and his party, the staunchly secular centre-left CHP, and the widespread feeling that there is no credible opposition.
