A woman takes a picture of "2007" by Dmitry Vrubel and Viktoria Timofeyeva, a collage of portraits showing Russian President Vladimir Putin, former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and other characters during an open museum night in the Winzavod art centre in Moscow May 18, 2007. Political controversy, tight security, worries about costs and mega-construction projects: for Sochi 2014, read Moscow 1980. The Communist Soviet Union has collapsed and the Cold war has ended since Moscow organised the Summer Olympics 34 years ago, but there are still some striking parallels with the Winter Games opening in Sochi on February 7, 2014. In bringing the Olympics to Russia, President Vladimir Putin is following in a tradition dating back to Soviet times of using sport to project his country as a world-beating superpower. For ageing Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, sport was one of the few fields where a country facing shortages and lagging the West on living standards could show itself as a dominant force. People look at a collage by Russian artist Andrei Budayev showing President Vladimir Putin and Soviet dictator Josef Stalin shaking hands in a gallery in Moscow January 18, 2007. In Russia, television news bulletins sing the praises of Putin and many ordinary people think twice before criticising him in public. But at an art gallery a stone's throw from the Kremlin an exhibition this week showed that biting political satire is still alive - as long as you know where to find it. The collage also features Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko (5th R) and former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev (4th R). REUTERS/Anton Denisov (RUSSIA)
