In homes that are cramped, stuffy and increasingly low on food, residents of Mumbai's huge Dharavi slum are struggling under India's nationwide lockdown. In Dharavi, where an estimated one million people live, residents are stretching out meals and relying on donations. But anxiety has been building since the lockdown began on March 25. Dharavi, believed to be Asia's largest slum, is a tough place to be confined, and also one of the most vulnerable to the new coronavirus because of the density of its population and poor sanitation. Hundreds of people sometimes share the same bathroom. Access to clean water is not guaranteed. Soap has become a luxury. The Barbie dolls of Barkindji elder Patricia Doyle's granddaughter wait in the bathroom to be cleaned at her home in Menindee, New South Wales, Australia, September 29, 2019. At Menindee, 830 km west of Sydney, despair has turned to anger as residents blame the government for exacerbating the drought by draining the river in 2017 floodtimes to irrigate farmland. Locals now avoid using tap water for drinking and washing babies and children, saying it has caused skin irritation, and prefer boxed and bottled water instead. "That was our food source, the river, our water source. That was our livelihood," said Doyle. Rondon, from Maracaibo, one of the hottest areas of Venezuela, said: "There is no life there, you wake up, and you do not have electricity. My son can't go to classes because there is no electricity, and the school doesn't have the right conditions; they don't have water in the bathrooms or for them to drink". "I decided to start teaching him at home in March." With tears running down her face, she said, "One of the toughest things (in Venezuela), was not being able to sleep. As a parent, you are so tired from all you do during the day. To take care of the children, wash their clothes, find food, and have to deal with a power cut at night knowing that it will last at least 12 hours. That's ugly. But it wasn't only one a day. It has been like that in March, April, May, and June until I left, almost every day it was the same." "I want my children to have an education like the one I had." "Most of the people there (in Venezuela) don't even dream of going to university. Mainly because you can't afford it and secondly, the quality is not the same as before." What he saw and heard that day haunts him, he said. He struggles to focus at work and suffers nightmares as deadly scenarios, almost like a video game, run on repeat through his sleep. Faisal now puts every effort in helping the families of victims by cooking and delivering food and running errands for them. "Maybe it's survivor's guilt, maybe it's empathy because whenever I visit the affected families, the only thing I think about is that when I was in that area, they were being shot, the bullets that I heard," he said. Jimmy Martinez, a 22-year old Salvadoran who has traveled north since October in a caravan of Central American migrants seeking to reach the United States, wears his shorts low and baggy and his hair slicked back like his favorite U.S. hip hop artists. Like many other young Central Americans who have traveled thousands of miles to this Mexican city with hopes of crossing the border into California, he said U.S. music videos and Hollywood films have formed his vision of the American Dream. All those interviewed for this story said they did not have enough food and water or facilities to go to the bathroom and wash. REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon SEARCH "KYUNG-HOON DREAMS" FOR THIS STORY. Migrants, part of a caravan travelling to the U.S., rest in a gym after arriving in Mapastepec, Mexico, November 2, 2018. Reuters photographer Leah Millis: "The migrants were resting after a very long day of walking. This was at the beginning of their journey and they hadn't gotten the hang of catching rides from passing cars and trucks. They didn't know where they would sleep at nights. Sometimes it was out in the open in a park in the middle of a town, or sometimes they were allowed to stay in places like this gym which had bathroom facilities and a roof to keep them dry."
