The grave of an unknown French soldier is seen at the "Tranchee des Baillonettes" (Trench of Bayonets) monument of Douaumont near Verdun, northeastern France, March 30, 2014. When the battlefield clearance parties began to search the Verdun area after the war, one party found what appeared to be a mass grave of men from one unit, the 137th Infantry Regiment and a line of some thirty nine bayonets protruding from the ground : each one marking the location of a body. The legend said the soldiers were killed in their "jumping off" trench when the intense German shelling literally buried them alive. All the bayonets have now been stolen. Hundreds of thousands of French and Germany soldiers were killed during the battle of Verdun. The year 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. A former residential street lies abandoned in the United Nations buffer zone in central Nicosia
A former residential street lies abandoned in the United Nations (U.N.) buffer zone in central Nicosia March 12, 2014. During the Cyprus conflict of 1974 opposing Greek and Turkish Cypriot forces controlled each side of the street. It was nicknamed "spear alley" as soldiers would attack each other by using bayonets attached to broomsticks. This year marks 40 years since the Cyprus National Guard staged a coup in Cyprus and the subsequent Turkish military intervention, which escalated a civil war between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities on the island. After the ceasefire, a heavily restricted U.N.-controlled buffer zone between the north and south of the island was put into operation. It stretches 180 km (112 miles) across the whole island measuring 7.4 km (4.6 miles) at its widest and 3.3 m (11 feet) at its narrowest point. It is restricted to the general public and no Greek or Turkish Cypriots are allowed inside. Picture taken March 12, 2014. REUTERS/Neil Hall (BRITAIN - Tags: POLITICS SOCIETY ANNIVERSARY)

A cross is seen at the "Tranchee des Baillonettes" (Trench of the Bayonets) monument near Verdun March 4, 2014. A hundred years after the guns fell silent in World War One, nine villages wiped out by fighting on France's bloodiest battleground continue to lead a ghostly existence. Their names still appear on maps and in government records. Mayors representing them are designated by local authorities. But most of the streets, shops, houses and people who once lived around the French army stronghold of Verdun are gone. Picture taken March 4, 2014. Former political activist Ba Htoo Maung poses for a picture in front of a portrait of Myanmar's independence hero General Aung San, father of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, in his home in Yangon December 16, 2011. Htoo Htoo, as he is known, was arrested on Dec. 11, 1991, a day after Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was stabbed in the leg with a bayonet and beaten before spending the next 11 years behind bars for helping organise the 1988 protests. After his release on March 9, 2003, Htoo Htoo gave politics a wide berth. Myanmar under a new and nominally civilian government has shown itself to be more responsive to the will of people and Htoo Htoo has launched a movement he calls "Metta", a Buddhist word that roughly means goodwill or peace.
