The Wider Image: Ghana's Millennial Avant-Garde
Fashion stylist Daniel Quist poses for a picture in front of a beauty parlour in Accra, Ghana, June 12, 2015. Young artists in Ghana's capital have evolved a new style that is turning heads and challenging accepted notions of African fashion. Their passions span fine art, graphic design, music and, above all, clothes that attract notice in a city where most men wear conservative Western suits or, on special occasions, shirts made from traditional fabrics. "I like the fact that it is creating drama in the minds of the people," DJ Evans Mireku Kissi said. The group publishes selfies on social media, projecting their style to an audience far beyond Accra. Fabiola Tuesta, 54, poses in her beauty salon in Gosen City, a slum in the Villa Maria del Triunfo municipality on the outskirts of Lima April 10, 2014. Tuesta said that not long ago nobody in Gosen had money to spend on luxuries like hair styling. Now she charges the equivalent of $1.79 for a cut and is the only hairdresser in the neighbourhood. A number of residents in Gosen City, a slum that grew up near a garbage dump on the outskirts of Lima, have seen their lives improve as parts of Peru feel the effects of years of economic growth. Peru's President Ollanta Humala has pledged to cut poverty to 15 percent by the end of his term in July 2016. He is still a long way from his goal, but the poverty rate is coming down, falling just under two percentage points to 23.9 percent in 2013 from the prior year. Picture taken April 10, 2014. Hairstylists braid a woman's hair at an outdoor beauty parlour in a tourist district of Khao San Road in Bangkok May 27, 2014. The Thai army's imposition of martial law is another blow to the country's tourist industry, adding to the economic pain from six months of destabilising street protests as airlines cut back on flights and concern over insurance adds to travellers' worries. Tourism makes up about 10 percent of Thailand's economy and the ebbing number of visitors contributed to a fall in gross domestic product in the first three months of the year, adding to fears the country is sliding into recession. An Afghan female prisoner applies make up in a beauty parlour at Herat prison, western Afghanistan, December 8, 2013. Foreign aid donors have ensured regular meals, heating and healthcare in Herat's prison for women, but those arrangements are now at risk and fears that its female prisoners may be abandoned are growing as the prison's main benefactor, the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team, winds down operations alongside most foreign troops. The government has shown little interest in protecting hard-won rights for women and most of its limited funds will be devoted to fighting a growing Taliban insurgency.
