The Wider Image: A slow death along the Pilcomayo River
In Paraguay, alongside the Pilcomayo River, black vultures flew over a shrinking pond where a group of crocodilian reptiles known as yacare caimans sought refuge. Water from the river, which divides Paraguay and Argentina in the area of the Gran Chaco, was scarce. This is not an uncommon sight in the region of General Diaz, about 700 kilometres (435 miles) northwest of the country's capital Asuncion, where the Pilcomayo's waters form lakes and streams that give life to capybaras, birds and caimans. "The river's situation is critical. No water is forecast to enter the basin until December, as happens every year," said Alcides Gonzalez, a resident of the area. A spectacled caiman is pictured on the bottom of Solimoes river at Sustainable Development Reserve of Piranha in Manacapuru, Amazonas state, Brazil, October 27, 2015. A severe drought has pushed river levels in Brazil's Amazon region to lows, leaving isolated communities dependent on emergency aid and thousands of boats stranded on parched riverbeds. A small caiman, or the Caiman Crocodilus, waits underwater in a river in Hato Pinero, 370 km (229 miles) west of Caracas, May 3, 2005. Venezuela's best-known eco-tourism reserve and cattle ranch is fighting for its survival against Venezuelan government land reform. The Hato Pinero, a private 200,000-acre (80,000 hectare) property was declared as being public land and subject to confiscation after President Hugo Chavez's government made it a target for takeover to redistribute rural land to the poor.
