Pictures of the Year: For Trump, a year of high drama at home and abroad
Christine Blasey Ford closes her eyes as she is sworn in before testifying to the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing for President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., September 27, 2018. Reuters photographer Jim Bourg: "The moment looks peaceful as if Christine Blasey Ford had closed her eyes in thought, but the image actually reflects the fact that in the nine seconds that she had her hand up to be sworn in to testify, she blinked several times. Blasey Ford began her testimony by saying: 'I am here today not because I want to be. I am terrified. I am here because I believe it is my civic duty to tell you what happened to me while Brett Kavanaugh and I were in high school.'" REUTERS/Jim Bourg SEARCH "TRUMP POY" FOR FOR THIS STORY. Frank Lettieri, 63, poses outside his home in the Staten Island borough of New York September 20, 2013. Even when Superstorm Sandy killed their neighbors and flooded their house, Frank and Mary Lettieri vowed to stay in the Staten Island, New York, home where they raised five children. But with a popular home buyback program set to close on its first house on October 3, 2013 and nearly the entire neighborhood fleeing, the self-declared holdouts are starting to blink. The voluntary buyback program spearheaded by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo would replace storm-ravaged neighborhoods with open land that could bear the brunt of future storms, and most residents are accepting the state's offer to pay full, pre-storm price and moving on. England's Frank Lampard (L) takes a shot on goal beside Germany's Sami Khedira (C) during a 2010 World Cup second round soccer match at Free State stadium in Bloemfontein June 27, 2010. It was the World Cup goal seen around the world but missed by the eyes that mattered most: Lampard's shot that dropped cleanly past the German goal line but was not given by the referee. The avalanche of complaints about that missed call and others during the largest soccer tournament in the world raised the philosophical question of whether instant-replay technology improves games or turns them into soulless events run by a bank of blinking lights.
