File photo showing Carmen Gloria Quintana near her home in Santiago in July of 1987. Quintana, then 18 years old, suffered burns over 65 percent of her body at the hands of a Chilean army patrol on July 2, 1986 in one of the worst incidents of violence during the dictatorship of Chilean General Augusto Pinochet. Rodrigo Rojas Denegri, a 19-year-old photographer and son of a Chilean exile, was killed in the same incident. They were arrested during protests against the military regime in a neighborhood of Santiago by an army patrol, searched, beaten, held within proximity of inflammable material, sprinkled with fuel, set on fire, and taken to a place on the outskirts of the city where they were unable to receive medical care, and there they were abandoned. Food that contains approximately 5,850 calories that Carlos, 17, used to consume in one day before taking part in a weight loss program, is displayed for a photograph at his home in Mexico City, Mexico, April 6, 2021. Weighing 137 kilos aged 16, more than twice the recommended weight, Carlos tested positive for COVID-19 in January and spent a month in hospital, much of that in pediatric intensive care. Carlos said he started overeating when pressure intensified at school. Attempts to change his eating habits repeatedly failed. "I woke up and realized that if I don't make a change, I'll always be like this: I'll never mature; always have this body," he said. "Sometimes my body wants something sugary, but I say no." The Wider Image: Dealing with the dead: the female undertakers of Harlem
There are 48 bodies in the basement of the funeral home in Harlem. Forty are in cardboard boxes, ready for cremation. The other eight are in the refrigerator, to be embalmed and buried. It will be weeks or months before they get either. As health officials began burying COVID-19 victims in a mass grave on Hart Island during New York's worst week of death, the four female undertakers at the International Funeral & Cremation Service started turning bodies away. This band of women morticians in heeled boots began to feel like they were failing. The way they see it, a person should get what they want in death, even if that was never possible in life. On the front lines of coronavirus pandemic, nurses and doctors are caring for the living. But there is another front line of those caring for the dead. They fear they can also get infected and die. Some of them have sent their own children to live with relatives. And because American cities like New York were never designed to dispose of so many dead, their call of duty will last much longer.
