Scientists unveiled the first detailed pictures of the infant universe April 26, showing it to be tiny, hot and cosmically "flat." This image of approximately 1800 square degrees of the southern sky was taken using the BOOMERANG telescope over a 10 day period from December 1998 - January, 1999. The image shows the distant Universe as it makes its transition from a glowing plasma to a perfectly transparent gas, approximately 14 billion years ago, a mere 300,000 years after the Big Bang.

FOR RELEASE WITH STORY BC-SINGAPORE-ISLAND - A young boy cycles from a bicycle rental store on the island of Pulau Ubin. The island off the northern coast of Singapore with just 600 inhabitants, is something of an alter ego to the modern bustling city state. There are charming kelongs or fishing traps, plantations and mangrove swamps, all vestiges of a bygone era. Nature lovers come to the island, shaped like a boomerang and just eight km long and 1.5 km wide, to bird-watch and hike while sports enthusiast like to thrash around in the bush on moutain bikes. Picture taken on August 30.
