Can & Can restaurant chef prepares canned sardines with eggplant and cherry tomato serve in downtown Lisbon, April 15, 2013. On the Comercio square a new restaurant and bar, Can & Can, opened recently serving fish cans as "gourmet" in a modern design atmosphere. Portugal, canned fish is as popular as burgers in the U.S. or bratwursts in Germany. Only about half of the once prosperous industry has survived over the years, but the remaining industry employs around 3,500 workers and produces more than 250 million fish cans a year, exporting around 70% of their production to some 70 countries worldwide. Tourists in Portugal buy fish cans just like postcards, taking with them not only the image but also a bit of Portuguese flavor. Photo taken April 15, 2013. A van drives past the Dolder Grand Hotel in Zurich in this March 14, 2008 file photo. The hotel, built from 1897-99, will be re-opened in April after more than $400 million in renovation and extension works, which began in 2004. Hundreds of thousands of soccer fans will spend millions of francs on beer, bratwurst and beds at Euro 2008 next month. The world?s third-largest sports event will be no more than a drop in the ocean for the Swiss economy, however, and will not save the Alpine nation from following the rest of the world into slowdown.
