CIUDAD ACUNA, Mexico
Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
A U.S. border patrol officer grabs the shirt of a migrant trying to return to the United States along the Rio Grande river, after having crossed from the United States into Mexico to buy food, as seen from Ciudad Acuna, in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico September 19, 2021. Reuters photographer Daniel Becerril: "The United States was holding hundreds of Hatian migrants at a camp in Del Rio, Texas. Many of them told me they were forced to stand in long lines in the intense heat to receive only one piece of bread and a bottle of water per person every day. "They don't give us food. They want to starve us," the migrants told me. Many migrants crossed back over the Rio Grande river to search for food and water in Mexico. At first, the U.S. Border Patrol allowed them to cross the river dividing the two nations. But by the late afternoon, the migrants were ordered to leave the river and return to camp. The agents drove their horses at them, waving something that looked like a whip. I can't get out of my head what I heard one Border Patrol agent say, "Go back to your shitty country." When I took this photo, I was standing in the river with water above my waist. One agent leaned over on his horse and grabbed the shirt of a Haitian migrant clinging to bags of food as he attempted to cross the river and return to the U.S. camp. I stayed in the river until dusk taking more photos, being careful not to cross over the border line and avoiding the dangerous currents that have drowned many migrants. Often my work brings me close to acts of cruelty. I hope this photo will remind the world of the humanity we all share regardless of race, nationality, social class or lifestyle." The Wider Image: Haiti's brides beat hurricanes, power cuts and protests to wed in style
Marriage is not as widespread in Haiti as in other Western countries, given the long-standing creole tradition of 'plasaj,' an informal marital relationship that is common in rural areas but not legally recognized. Yet marriage has greater prestige and is particularly favored by Haiti's wealthier, cosmopolitan urbanites, according to Haitian sociologist Tamas Jean Pierre - not least because it is recognized abroad. Still, in a country where more than half the population lives under the poverty line of $2.41 per day, only the wealthiest of Haitian couples can afford the full shebang of a wedding ceremony, lavish dinner reception, and honeymoon. Most have to get creative. Sometimes multiple couples get married at the same time to save on church fees. They might skip the reception or, in the countryside, offer a simple meal of bread, fried plantains, rice and coffee. Sometimes, the whole village might provide food. Disputes can occur when there is not enough for all those who turn up, or when guests try to take home dishes or drinks. Despite tight purse strings, the showiness of the ceremony is the one element of the Haitian wedding that never lacks. There are not many people left in Zaitseve, a village on the front line that divides Ukraine. Destruction and damage are widespread after five years of conflict over eastern Ukraine between government forces and Russian-backed separatists. Around 13,000 people have been killed, a quarter of them civilians, according to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. Troops are stationed in trenches outside Zaitseve and government trucks risk rebel fire to bring bread, coal, firewood and other goods along a dirt road. Employees from the state-run Oschadbank travel by armoured truck to a nearby checkpoint, to allow residents on both sides of the conflict to withdraw money. Some six hundred kilometres (400 miles) away in Kiev, President Petro Poroshenko has made standing up to Russia a central thrust of what has become a tough political battle for reelection. Voters say the conflict is the single biggest issue facing the country but struggle to identify who can best end it. REUTERS/Gleb Garanich SEARCH "ELECTION WAR" FOR THIS STORY.
