A dry wind blows dust across the high-desert plateau, smoke from wildfires in Arizona and California shrouding the nearby rim of the Grand Canyon. The summer monsoon rains have failed again, and stock ponds meant to collect rainwater for the hot summer months are dry. With no ground water for her animals, Sloan, 59, fills an animal trough with water from a 1,200-gallon white plastic tank. She and her husband, Leonard, have to pay up to $300 to have the tank filled as her pickup truck has broken down. When it's working, she hauls water herself every two days, spending $80 a week on fuel. The cost of hauling water has made their ranch unprofitable. The Navajo Nation ? covering a 27,000 square mile area straddling the U.S. states of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah competes with growing cities including Phoenix and Los Angeles for its water supply. And as climate change dries out the U.S. West, that supply is becoming increasingly precarious. REUTERS/Stephanie Keith TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY SEARCH "NAVAJO KEITH" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: The mission to save the Amazon's animals
An anteater rests in a bathroom sink while receiving treatment at veterinarian of the state environmental police Marcelo Andreani's house, near Porto Velho, Rondonia State, Brazil, August 19, 2020. The anteater arrived with a broken left paw after a clash with a fierce porcupine. The patient had been found hiding in a garage and, again, the vets think it might have been fleeing fires as anteaters rarely turn up in the city. The fracture required surgery. Under anaesthetic, a giant tongue rolled out of the anteater's mouth, earning it the affectionate nickname Linguaruda, or Long-tongue. After surgery, one of the vets took Linguaruda home to keep a closer eye on her recovery. At one point, she climbed into the bathroom sink to rest. In five days, Linguaruda was strong enough to return to the wild - the best outcome her rescuers could wish for. REUTERS/Ueslei Marcelino SEARCH "BRAZIL ANIMALS" FOR THIS STORY. A recovered anteater is released in Amazon forest after receiving veterinary treatment by a veterinarian of the state environmental police Marcelo Andreani and the owner of the veterinary clinic Clinidog Carlos Henrique, near Porto Velho, Rondonia State, Brazil, August 19, 2020. The anteater arrived with a broken left paw after a clash with a fierce porcupine. The patient had been found hiding in a garage and, again, the vets think it might have been fleeing fires as anteaters rarely turn up in the city. The fracture required surgery. After surgery, one of the vets took Linguaruda home to keep a closer eye on her recovery. In five days, Linguaruda was strong enough to return to the wild - the best outcome her rescuers could wish for. Linguaruda was freed near a forest trail, where it eagerly clambered among the trees once more. REUTERS/Ueslei Marcelino SEARCH "BRAZIL ANIMALS" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES
