Street musician Zhang Mingyuan signs his autograph on his CD near a woman buying a copy of it during his daily performance at a square outside a shopping mall in Beijing July 9, 2014. Every night from 7pm till around midnight, any Beijinger who craves for a moment of music, can go and enjoy an open-air concert at the southeast corner outside a shopping mall of the city. Though it's held at a street corner and the singer, Zhang, doesn't belong to any of those famous music labels, the warm atmosphere he created and Beijing's chilling night breeze seldom let anyone down. Zhang, 31, gradually became a local sensation after starting his career as a street singer in Beijing since 2009 and selling around 40,000 copies of his own record. Picture taken on July 9, 2014. A busker's bagpipes are seen on Princes Street in Edinburgh, Scotland April 30, 2014. The distinctive sound of the bagpipes is recognised worldwide and have found their way into popular music by the likes of Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, The White Stripes and Rod Stewart. Scottish separatists are closing the gap on their unionist rivals as a September independence referendum draws nearer, according to a poll. But pollster TNS said it would still be a "major task" for them to draw level in time. In a poll of 995 adults, TNS found that support for the pro-independence campaign had grown by two points to 32 percent compared with last month, while the campaign to reject independence had slipped back a point to 41 percent. In the run-up to the vote, Reuters photographer Suzanne Plunkett took a series of close-up pictures of food, drink and various objects typically associated with Scotland. A busker plays the accordion on King Street, the main shopping street in Kilmarnock, Scotland March 27, 2014. The Scottish capital, Edinburgh, has an air of prosperity that explains why so many of its residents are happy with their lot and unwilling to risk the changes independence may bring. But in Kilmarnock it is a different story. The once proud industrial town has been named the worst place to live in Scotland, battling high unemployment and with pawnbrokers and discount stores dominating its shopping centre. The contrast between the two is startling and highlights the wide social divide among Scots ahead of a September 18 referendum when Scottish residents will decide whether to leave the United Kingdom after over 300 years to become an independent country. Buskers play music instruments on a street in Culiacan February 27, 2014. Mexican kingpin Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, arrested last weekend, started life in the village of La Tuna high in the sierra of Mexico's northwestern state of Sinaloa. Marijuana and the poppies used for opium have been grown here for decades, fueling the rise of successive dynasties of famous drug lords. Guzman, known by his nickname "Chapo" (or "Shorty"), was arrested on Saturday when Mexican marines stormed a condominium in the beach resort of Mazatlan. For many of the youngsters growing up in the surrounding hillsides, Guzman is a role model and a hero, holding out hope for a life of power, women and wealth in a land where the only alternative for many is to toil in the fields or join the vast informal economy of street merchants.
