This 1.8 million hectares reserve is the home of 600 birds species and 11 monkey species among other animals, as caymans and mammals, and has one of the highest levels of biodiversity of any park in the world with more than 200 varieties of trees found in one hectare. A White-faced capuchin is fed by biologist Carmen Hernandez at the Las Pumas Rescue Shelter in Canas, Guanacaste, 200 km (124 miles) from San Jose, March 19, 2008. The shelter was created 40 years ago, by Swiss Werner Hagnauer and his late wife Lilly Bodmer, when the deforestation levels in Guanacaste were high. Hagnauer received animals that the neighbours brought to save their lives, as well as those the Ministry of Environment confiscates.
