The Wider Image: Sea superfood: Can seaweed help solve Ireland's cow methane problem?
Emily Roskam, a PhD Walsh Scholar at Teagasc, prepares castor oil to add to sheep feed during a Seasolutions trial where sheep are fed seaweed extract to reduce their methane emissions at the Teagasc Agriculture and Food Development Authority in it's Mellows Campus in Athenry, Ireland, August 31, 2021. "We have 140 sheep here and each morning they are getting half a kilo of concentrates, they get 400 grams of nuts made of maize meal and a bit of molasses which is kind of sugary to stick them together, then they each get 100 grams of their additives, we have a 'control diet' or we have seaweed extract," said Roskam. An offshore platform of the Castor gas storage project is seen off the coast of Alcanar
The offshore platform of the European Investment-bank backed Castor gas storage project, is seen off the coast of Alcanar, eastern Spain, October 7, 2013. Spain's government ordered a stop to injections of gas into the Castor Project's submarine natural gas storage facility after a series of small earthquakes struck the coast around the area including a 4.2 magnitude quake, the strongest yet in the region, coinciding with the injection of gas. The public prosecutor in the Spanish city of Castellon has opened an investigation into potential criminal liabilities after hundreds of unusual small earthquakes, possibly linked to a natural gas storage project, have shaken the Valencia coast. Scientists say the earthquakes are likely triggered by natural gas injections at the 1.3 billion euro ($1.8 billion)Castor underground gas storage plant, owned by Spain's ACS and Canada's Dundee Energy. A boy carries a bucket of powder and a bottle of castor oil, both of which are used to increase friction, during a Mallakhamb class at the Shree Samartha Vyayam Mandir in Mumbai, November 3, 2012. Mallakhamb is an ancient Indian sport which originated as a complementary exercise for wrestling, but is now practised as a sport in itself. The name is a combination of the words "malla", which means athlete or strong man, and "khamba", which means pole. Athletes perform a variety of yogic and gymnastic poses while suspended from a rope or on a pole. Practitioners say that the sport not only develops a healthy and strong body, but also strengthens willpower and helps compose the mind. REUTERS/Vivek Prakash (INDIA - Tags: SPORT SOCIETY)
