An ethnic Circassian holds a placard during a protest against the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in front of the Russian embassy in Amman February 7, 2014. Dozens of ethnic Circassians living in Jordan gathered for the demonstration on Friday. Circassians are a people indigenous to the North Caucasus region, most of whom were scattered across the globe by a 19th century tsarist military campaign that caused the deaths of huge numbers. Many Circassians have called for the killings to be recognised as genocide, and have campaigned against the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, set to take place in the very same broad valleys and mountain slopes they say hold the bones of their ancestors. This would of course be a very good thing. At the same time, I would like people to understand that Circassians are more than just folklore dance and costumes. Our culture is very rich and ancient. There is much more to it," Alyal said. The writing on Alyal's cap reads "Circassian". Abdurakhim Magomedov, a respected Salafi preacher who ran a woman's madrassa, speaks during an interview inside his house in Novosasitli village in the Dagestan region, September 28, 2013. Ahead of the Sochi Olympics in February, Russia is taking saliva samples from religiously conservative Muslim women, according to locals in the North Caucasus, gathering DNA so authorities can identify the body parts if any become suicide bombers. The move coincides with a drive by President Vladimir Putin to crack down on an Islamist insurgency in Dagestan, a province in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains east of the Winter Games sites in Sochi. Girls walk along a street, with a mosque seen in the background, in Bezengi village, February 4, 2013. These days only a handful of the most intrepid skiers and hikers make it to Elbrus, which dominates the North Caucasus region, where Islamist insurgents from ethnic minorities are fighting Russian rule and want to establish an Emirate. Elbrus is the unlikely centrepiece of a $26-billion Kremlin project for a chain of luxury mountain resorts that Moscow hopes will succeed, where guns and troops have not, in ending the violence and easing dissent in the region.
