The Wider Image: Aajibaichi Shaala - no ordinary school
Aajibaichi Shaala is not your ordinary school in India. The students at "grandmothers' school" in the village of Fangane are elderly women who are getting the chance to learn to read. India's literacy rate grew to 74 percent in the decade to 2011, according to the latest census, but female literacy continued to lag the rate for males by a wide margin. About 65 percent of women were found to be literate, compared with 82 percent of men, according to the 2011 report. Education experts and researchers have cited outdated attitudes toward women, including a preference for male children over females, and child marriages as main reasons for the lower female literacy rate. At Aajibaichi, afternoon classes in the one-room school are held six days a week for two hours. The lessons are timed so the women can finish their chores, or their work in the fields, before attending class. REUTERS/Danish Siddiqui SEARCH "AAJIBAICHI" FOR THIS STORY. Sun and her 53-year-old husband Li Guoquan's son, Li Chao, was born in 1987 and died from a car accident in 2013. Sun terminated another pregnancy and couldn't think of having a second child because of the strict application of the one-child policy. After the loss of their son, Sun has suffered from conditions including depression, high blood pressure and diabetes. They live on Sun's pension and Li's monthly salary; it is not enough to cover their medical bills so they rely on the savings they had put aside for their son's marriage. The change to the one-child policy is too late and means nothing to them, they said. In New York on Friday to witness the United Nations adopt a new set of global goals that includes empowering all women and girls, Jacinta, 17, said two of the biggest problems facing girls her age in Kenya were rape and early marriage. A girl plays with a balloon in front of a bridal dress shop at La Bola street in downtown Ronda, southern Spain, August 27, 2015. Spain's economy is growing at its fastest pace since 2007, though for many ordinary citizens times are harder than ever. While tourists and higher earners are driving a consumer boom that propelled economic growth to 1 percent between April and June, the 5 million-plus unemployed and millions more in insecure and poorly-paid jobs are by and large spending less. The couple, who are legally married in New York State, sued the state of Ohio after the state refused to name both men on their son's birth certificate after legally adopting Cooper in Ohio. Their case is part of a consolidated lawsuit spanning four states that is heading to the United States Supreme Court in April in a case many say could make same-sex marriage legal in all of the United States. Luis Delgado (R) holds son Marco as husband Antonio Ferndandez holds their daughter Olivia, at their home in Cancun February 24, 2015. The gay married couple from Spain who used a Mexican surrogate are unable to return to Spain with their new-born twins as they are unable to secure passports for their babies. The surrogate gave birth to the twins in Tabasco on January 6 but Mexico has refused to give Delgado and Fernandez passports to take the twins home. According to El Pais newspaper, the couple cannot be granted passports due to a conflict of interest. The state of Tabasco recognizes surrogate births but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not. It is illegal for couples to have babies via surrogates in Spain but if the country where the baby was born officially confirms the couple are the biological parents, then Spain will be able to register them. If not, the mother must appear in the paperwork, El Pais reported. REUTERS/Victor Ruiz Garcia (MEXICO - Tags: POLITICS SOCIETY IMMIGRATION)

A man holds onto a girl as he brings her back to her family home after she tried to escape when she realised she is to be married, about 80 km (50 miles) from the town of Marigat in Baringo County December 7, 2014. As Pokot tradition dictates, the future husband arrived to her family home with a group of men to collect the girl. The men arrived with the last settled dowry of livestock for the girl's family. In this case it was 20 goats, three camels and 10 cows, given during a period of several weeks. The remaining 10 cows were to be given the morning the girl was taken to her new home by her husband and the rest of the men. The girl was unaware of the marriage arrangements that her father had made. The family said that if they had told her in advance she might have run away from home. In the Pokot tradition, parents give their daughters as wives usually at the beginning of their adolescence. The Pokots have developed social structure and practices that aim to optimise the chance of survival of each household in an often difficult and hostile environment. The girls are ready for marriage after an initiation ceremony marking their passing over into womanhood. Picture taken December 7, 2014. A homeless Palestinian bride walks with her mother (R) during her wedding ceremony at a United Nations-run school sheltering displaced Palestinians from the Israeli offensive, in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip August 17, 2014. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday any deal on Gaza's future had to meet Israel's security needs, warning Hamas it faced "harsh strikes" if it resumed firing into the Jewish state. With a five-day ceasefire due to expire late on Monday, negotiators returned after consultations to Cairo to seek an end to five weeks of hostilities that have killed more than 2,000 people.
